Twenty-five years ago today, this country changed in a matter of hours. We remember the people who did not come home, the families who have carried that loss every day since, and the responders who continue to carry the toll of that day.

Most people have never heard of EMAS.

Engineered Materials Arresting System. Beds of crushable material at the end of a runway. When an aircraft overruns, its tires sink in and it stops before it reaches whatever is on the other side of the fence.

Our managing partner Mike Slack spoke with WESH 2 News about it following the Amazon cargo jet crash at Miami International, where five people were killed and five injured.

"There are systems that can be put in place that prevent the airplane from leaving the airport perimeter," Mike said.

The FAA says EMAS is installed at roughly 70 airports nationwide. Miami International is not one of them.

Our managing partner and aviation attorney, Mike Slack, spoke with Spectrum News 13 following Sunday’s fatal runway overrun at Miami International Airport.

Five people were killed and five injured when a cargo jet left the runway and struck vehicles on a roadway outside the airport. The crash closed the airport for hours and diverted flights across Florida.

The NTSB investigation could take six months to a year.

America's first aviation law wasn't written in a major city.

It was written in Kissimmee, Florida in 1908, at a time when the town had no airplanes and no pilots.

After witnessing early aircraft demonstrations in Paris, city attorney P.A. Vans Agnew drafted an ordinance restricting how low and how fast balloons, aeroplanes, airships, and other flying machines could travel over city streets.

The ordinance quickly gained national attention. The Washington Post reported on it in 1910, legal scholars referenced it soon after, and it became one of the earliest examples of aviation law in the United States.

Federal regulation of pilots and aircraft wouldn't arrive until the Air Commerce Act of 1926, but every area of law has to start somewhere.

Thirty-six years ago this month, we lost a Texas music legend. Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed in a helicopter crash in Wisconsin. He was just 35 years old.

Born in Oak Cliff and forever connected to Austin, Stevie helped bring the blues back into the mainstream with songs like Texas Flood, Pride and Joy, and Crossfire. His influence on music is still felt today.

Following the crash, founding partners Mike Slack and Tom Davis represented Stevie's family in the legal case. We were honored to stand with his family during such a difficult time.

Today, his legacy lives on through his music and at his statue overlooking Lady Bird Lake at Auditorium Shores.
