Join OUTsider for a special screening of WAKE.

Part requiem, part reckoning, WAKE is a ritual for transformation. Filmed during the 2024 Los Angeles premiere, Filipino American artist Jay Carlon steps into the ring of memory and ancestry, confronting grief both personal and inherited. What begins as a solo act becomes a public rite: a prayer, a provocation, a body in resistance.

Created in collaboration with experimental sound artist Micaela Tobin and featuring the late láwû makuriye’nte, whose performance brought radical depth and presence to this work; a singular moment now preserved on film and shared with the OUTsider community with whom they were so deeply embedded.

Special thanks to the WAKE team for allowing us to screen their piece for a second time this year for our Austin folx. If you missed it at the fest then you’re in luck.

All proceeds from this event will go towards funding a q***r filipinx artist in a future OUTsider showcase.

OUTsider invites submissions from all artistic media, but our capacity is limited to time-based arts. In all instances, strong consideration will be given to works from marginalized subjectivities, including those related to differences of race, gender, sexuality, ability, size, generation, migratory status, and nation.

For OUTsider 2027 we hope to center the power of q***r and trans creatives who are inspired by–and who inspire–radical acts of worldbuilding. Our hope is that our time together yields possibilities for a q***r futurity grounded in ancestral knowledge rather than technological optimism. We seek creative work that speaks towards envisioning more liveable futures for all of US.

OUTsider is excited to be partnering with to present a performative screening of the short film “Versos de porquería” / “Verses of Filth” by Naomi Rincón Galllardo. Naomi is a Mexican visual artist whose work is deeply rooted in q***r, feminist and decolonial methods and draws from pre-colonial epistemes.

In “Verses of Filth,” a bastardized Cihuateteo has become a scavenger/seeker digging up wasteland residues: body fragments and cultural debris. Along with a band of vultures, the scavanger recruits a brigade of arms that have been detached from their bodies and underworld creatures seeking touch, pleasure and revolt. In a Mesoamerican episteme, vultures connect the earth with the underworld by sticking their heads into dead bodies. These scavenger birds eat waste, decay and corpses and are considered purifying agents. The arms that rise from the grave insist on raising their decapitated fist in protest. Still, they also insist on seeking bonds of proximity with other arms, caressing, repairing, documenting, snapping, signing, and reading words that give an account of their existence.

Enrique Arriaga and Venese Medovich Alcantar will join Naomi for this special event at Fusebox to enhance the spoken word performance and projection by bringing electronic music and dance to the live performance.
