You are transported back in time to a smoky 1970s LA nightclub. In front of you a band of young, long-haired revolutionary-minded Asian Americans get on stage, and begin laying into the nastiest, funkiest groove you’ve ever heard this side of Boyle Heights.
At least, that was the vibe I was going for when composing the music for this segment where Bob Nakamura describes the excitement and energy of the burgeoning Asian American movement and founding of Visual Communications. This short music cue is an homage and love letter to the mid-1970s era of the pioneering band Hiroshima, when they were still starting out playing small clubs, with a raw and incredibly funky sound (and the keen-eyed and knowledgeable viewers will spot Hiroshima band members in the film’s montage).
Obviously a funky flute solo was in order, so I enlisted the talent of Michael Birnbryer-Lao aka to transform my plain MIDI flute part into a living, organic solo, and damn did he deliver!
Third Act is now streaming on PBS! So many people have asked where they can watch it, and up until this past week I’ve had to tell them it’s only in festivals. But I’m excited to announce the broadcast premiere.
Anyone can watch it now:
• streaming at pbs.org/independentlens/
• on the PBS app
• on your local PBS station
I’m really honored and proud to have scored this film. In my own clumsy words, I’d say that Third Act is basically a father and son story about a pioneering Asian American filmmaker coming to terms with mortality and a son following in his footsteps but discovering a darker past to his father he never knew about. Throughout the story it weaves the history of the Asian American movement alongside deeper themes of community, family, art and activism.
It’s such a complex story to tackle, but Tad really hit it out of the park with this one. In his own words, it really is the most important film he’s ever made.
Hope you guys give it a watch! ❤️
big shoutout to editor , producers .ka .e.margolin and of course the director himself

y’all my first real award!!! …ok that’s not entirely true. I won the “most creative” trophy for the pinewood derby back when I was a cub scout (for my hand-carved car that didn’t win any races)
after mixing and mastering nearly 200 weekly videos for over the past several years, it means so much that his management team surprised me by shipping me this beautiful springy award (yes, it bounces when you push down on it)
HUUUUGE congrats to Josh for winning two Webbys, both the Creaters Comedy award as well as the People’s Voice award!
Josh, your unmatched commitment to your craft continues to inspire the hell out of me!
a BIG THANKS to everyone in his team (esp Amanda, Jacob, Dom, Eric), as well as who first introduced me to Josh like 6 years ago when we worked on his first comedy and music album (Mike also helped produce music for Josh’s latest HBO special)

Hey guess what, has been nominated for a Webby award! If he wins, I guess that kinda means I do too, since I’ve mixed and mastered the audio for virtually every weekly show he’s released for the past several years. So be sure to vote, bc polls close Thursday April 16 which at the time of this posting is only 4 days away!

I could never overstate how much influence James Gadson has been on my drumming. And while I’m super sad that he has moved on from this earthly realm, it is bringing me a lot of joy to revisit the videos we took during our rehearsals from him back in 2018, when he performed with at a special Funky Sole event.
Many are aware of his drumming, but not as many have heard his beautiful soulful voice, as heard on songs like “What Can You Bring Me” by Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band— the band where he got his start. It was really cool hearing him tell stories from back in those days.
If you’re a drummer, look closely at his sticking for those cool snare fills, and look at how relaxed he is while playing those fast 16th notes on the ride cymbal! To this day I’m still learning from you Mr. Gadson! Thank you 🙏✨🙏
