Imagine if your child had the opportunity to enjoy unhurried, self-directed play all year round? 🤔

Here's my somewhat unpopular opinion about caring for kids during the summer months: they need as much time as possible to be unhurried and gloriously unstructured.

Those slightly boring, self-directed hours, the ones that can feel almost lazy, are where so much real development happens. Kids are using their imaginations, problem-solving, learning resilience, and finding ways to be calm. In fact, researchers are now linking the loss of this kind of free time to rising anxiety in children.

Our kids need days that are unscheduled. They need to lose track of time.

So this summer, whatever yours looks like, give them, and yourself, permission to simply be. ❤️

We complete each day with a lovely cuppa tea and discussing our day's roses and thorns. It's a beautiful way for our community to connect, reflect, and repair relationships. 🌹✨

Democracy in action 🙋‍♂️

When children are trusted with their autonomy, they learn that their voice matters.

Here, a group of children decided to have snack together and vote on which story they wanted staff to read. They navigated this process completely on their own.

When we respect children's autonomy we empower them them ✨

It's not about conserving resources. It's about exploration.

Did one child out of 12 use ALL the colored water and ALL the soap? Yup and they also got to take THEIR idea and follow it through to the end.

In a truly child-led program, the children have the freedom to decide how the resources are used and in what capacity. 💦🌈
