Roadhouse Relics is the family owned Austin, Texas, studio, gallery and gift shop where neon artist
In 1997, Todd turned a crumbling old fruit stand on S. 1st street into an Austin landmark that the New York Times has since listed as a must see. The gallery is most often identified by the iconic “Greetings from Austin” postcard mural on the side of the building. In true South Austin spirit, the mural was painted before the collapsed roof was replaced. Todd has built a career designing and crafting original, entirely handmade neon works with the same care and craftsmanship as the original master sign makers. He calls his style modern vintage, but considers himself a pop artist, sharing an artistic vein mined by Andy Warhol and similar creative talents. Sanders’ work is prized by art collectors and celebrities including Willie Nelson, Shepard Fairey, Norah Jones, Kacey Musgraves, Johnny Depp and Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top).

Excited about the new chapter to our saga. The 65 year old bug, WILLIE N FESTUS is going to be restored, but will stay on the property. On a 30’ pole to be seen by his adoring fans. The rooster, I call him POOR MAN’s PEACOCK’ is heading to Round Top Texas after he gets a little refurbish. Does anyone remember this bug?
I met Cameron Gott a year ago when he was filming a video for a hero, Robert Earl Keen’s birthday. It was a tribute song sung by another hero, Hayes Carll.
Instantly he was an old friend.
Talented guy. He had the instinct to use my Austin studio, while I still had it, for this McDonald’s commercial. He was nice enough to include me as a personality in the commercial.
But I know the neon is the real star.

I crafted this piece I call the JUNKYARD CROWN. Made from old car taillights, pop bottle caps and old 1930’s Texas license plates.
It was recently sold back to us by my collector who is downsizing and can’t keep it. It’s an early piece But I replaced all of the neon and electric components inside to make it like new.
I love seeing these pieces come back to me. I’d love to keep all of them, but this one deserves a new home.

Part of me wants to keep the spots where I find the treasures I add to my art a secret. But it’s no secret that Broadway Paul’s is the best ‘mantique’ store in central Texas. The best part is Paul and Wendy. When our son Jack started collecting, they were warm, generous folks that made him love antiques even more. This is what my mornings will soon look like. I’ll miss South Austin, but I turned 59 a few days ago. At this point in my life this just fits. My studio is going up soon, and I hope you come out to see me in Round Top.

A bit to surreal to see this in actual newsprint. Thank you to the Austin American-Statesman for chronicling my upcoming move. As many of you know, I’m packing up my South Austin studio at the end of 2026 and moving it to a new location in Round Top TX. Our home remains in Austin and my heart will always be here.
