The top reason nurses gave for staying at the bedside this year wasn't loyalty. It wasn't the team either. It's that they couldn't afford to leave.

That belief costs people years, and for most clinicians it isn't true.

The average MatchDay Fellow raises their salary by 20% moving out of clinical work. Average new salary is $112,000. Fellows who negotiate add another $14,000 on top of that.

Leaving isn't the risk it gets treated as. Staying in a job you've already quit in your head has a cost too.

APTA's own data: 7.4% of practicing physical therapists plan to leave within two years. Another 16.2% are cutting their hours.

Put that next to the rest of the picture. The country is short more than 12,000 full-time PTs. About seven in ten therapists already work at or over capacity.

The profession isn't short on demand. It's short on therapists who can keep going on these terms.

Six non-clinical careers for OTs. They all work for the same reason.

OT training is task analysis. You break an activity into its parts, find where it falls apart for this person, and redesign it. That's ergonomics consulting. It's also UX research. And it's most of quality and regulatory work.

Nobody tells you that while you're writing home safety evals. But you've been doing applied human factors the whole time.

The six: ergonomics consultant, UX researcher, clinical ops manager, assistive tech specialist, quality and regulatory specialist, and one more.

79% of MatchDay Fellows land a non-clinical role like these.

Maggie was a physical therapist and a clinic ops manager.

Now she's a Customer Success Specialist. Fully remote, out of patient care.

Her total comp came to $118,000. That's a sox-figure salary AND better work-life balance.

Here's the part worth copying. She didn't jump straight to the job she wanted. She took a part-time clinical ops role first, got some traction, then went after the real target. Two placements, one plan.

She treated the search like a second job. 75 resumes out. 15 replies. 4 interviews. One offer that beat her number.

43% of nurses say they want to leave the bedside. Last year it was 38%.

But here's the number that matters more. The most common reason nurses gave for staying wasn't loyalty, and it wasn't the team. It's that they can't afford to go.

That's not a resilience problem. It's a pay problem, and it needs a different fix than another wellness week.

Three non-clinical jobs opened up this week. Every one of them wants something you already do.

Flatiron Health needs a Manager of Customer Experience in Durham.

Virta Health wants an Associate Manager of Customer Operations at $80,000 to $95,000, remote-first.

Cardinal Health is paying $68,500 to $107,470 for an Account Manager in Customer Success, also remote.

None of them ask you to learn healthcare. They ask you to already get it, and to explain it to someone who doesn't. That's the whole transferable skill. You've been using it for years without calling it one.

79% of MatchDay Fellows land a non-clinical role. It takes 88 days on average.

Four questions that trip up almost every clinician in a non-clinical interview (and how to actually answer them).

"Why are you leaving clinical work?" isn't an apology prompt. It's a chance to talk about scale.

"Do you have industry experience?" is really asking whether the problem is familiar, not whether the job title matches.

"How do you handle ambiguity?" is one every shift already answered.

And "where do you see yourself in 5 years?" is checking for commitment to the new path, not nostalgia for the old one.

Is coaching worth it for rehab therapists?

Depends entirely on which kind.

Generic career coaching is a generalist, session-by-session, with no healthcare specialization and no defined outcome.

A structured system — built specifically for clinicians, run by coaches with 2,500+ hours of clinical-aligned experience — is the difference between "eventually, maybe" and a measurable outcome you can actually plan around.

79% placement rate, 88 days average time to offer, backed by a 1,000+ member community of peers, alumni, and hiring managers.

Jeanne left MatchDay with 2 job offers & a new role.

MatchDay helped her connect the dots, coaching her to build interview answers that drew on every corner of her background, not just her clinical training.

She landed a Program Manager role first.

Then, in her second placement with MatchDay, she became Rehab Director.

Hybrid, six-figures, a $10k increase from her OT job, and a shorter commute and a team she's genuinely proud to be part of.

Chiropractors: You won't be starting over. You'll be repositioning expertise you already have.

Medical Device Sales. Wellness Program Director. MSK & Rehab Tech Product Specialist.

Three roles built on the same biomechanics fluency and patient communication chiropractors use every day.
