“Kill Me” 🤝 “The Gold.” I’m obsessed with Lost Weekend. Been working on a cover of “Kill Me,” and something about this tuning (DADF ) reminded me of Phoebe’s cover of “The Gold.” They work very well together.
couple of verses from a new one I’ve been working on. started writing it last week as water was literally boiling in a pot on my stove.
water boils in the pot
cannonball
scattershot
can you feel, miles away,
the resonance?
the ricochet?
does your god know your name?
does he love
us all the same
as he did when we were born?
have no fear
do no harm

I still don’t know if we’re doing tags or keywords anymore (or if it even matters for non-video posts ((social media promotion is a mystery))) so here are some relevant and adjacent words: indie folk singer-songwriter ethereal flaming lips cover austin music independent musician q***r trans glockenspiel
Anna () and I made a cover of “waitin’ for a superman,” and you can hear it right now today! We embraced the quirks of my old mixer and 4-track and tried our best not to be too too precious, which, if you know us, is a challenge. It’s a gift to make music at all, and it’s very special to make music with people you love!!! This is now my favorite version of this song that exists. It’s delicate in a way that increases the impact of the words. Anna was right to not let me strum all over it, hah. Her instincts shaped the direction of this arrangement, and her vocal delivery informed the tone that mine took. I’m really proud of what we made together.
We used my camcorder to document some of the making-of while Anna was in town, and then I used it to vlog what I was doing after she left. I cut that footage down to about 13 minutes, and it’s up on youtube if you’re curious! You know where to find the link. It’s us being goobers and me pressing buttons on my 4-track. (Special thanks to .wav for camcorder-ing at Radio East!)

The take that became my cover of “poison oak.” It was important to me that the final release was one take from top to bottom, and this is the take. Recorded live to cassette (and video recorded on a Hi8 camcorder - can’t get enough of those clunky analog workflows, apparently).

“poison oak” is out today. It feels inappropriate to be promoting myself right now, but art connects us to our humanity, so here I am posting about it. This song has been special to me for a long time (swipe to see how long), and it’s one that I felt before I really understood. I wanted this cover to celebrate what makes art human, so I recorded it live to cassette. No edits, no scrubbing out imperfections. It is what it is, and I’m proud of it.

I took the cover photo on the road in or near Big Bend NP. A place that I cherish and land that I love. A beautiful expanse of a desert shared with Mexico, where you can look into the near distance and not know whether the mountains you see are in the US or in Mexico. The notion of separation dissolves.
None of my covers are on bandcamp, but if you feel compelled to grab anything over there, I’ll be donating 100% of my payout for the next week to . That goes for , too. So many of my recordings for that project have been made on the border, looking across the river and saying, “Hey, that’s Mexico.”
NO ONE IS ILLEGAL ON STOLEN LAND.
Slide two is from when my mom and I took the commuter train to see play Auditorium Shores in 2011. It was a supermoon that night.
Slide three is 2011 me covering this song, hidden away in the corner of the house where no one could hear me.

I’m releasing a cover of “poison oak” on 01/31/2026. As you can imagine, I have some thoughts about recording philosophy. I think these are too important to let them be buried in a caption.
Art is human expression. Don’t let anyone take that from you.
(fingers crossed that the cover license clears in time, lol)
