Notes from a Songwriter (new name:))

If you’ve been keeping up with the music industry’s breaking news, you already know about Spotify’s announcement of their new “AI Persona.” If you missed it, here is what you need to know.

First, this labeling has no direct relation to the music itself, only the creation of the Spotify profile. This means banner and profile photos that have been AI-generated will now be flagged as “Likely AI Persona.” The word likely is used in cases that Spotify was not notified beforehand. Those who have used AI in any part of creating their profile now have the chance to notify Spotify through Spotify for Artists.

On August 11th, Spotify is initiating a large step, and though I may disagree when it comes to artist payout, I am excited to watch this come to fruition in the coming months. As the industry has been navigating the fast and aggressive growth of AI music, any movement towards transparency is important. The “AI Persona” badge is the first domino. As the labeling begins to be attached in mid-September, Spotify states that this will lead to the algorithm highlighting authentic artist profiles. We love to see that. Now it may not be perfect at first, but Spotify is working behind the scenes to make more efforts towards real music appreciation.

AI Persona made public, in beta, Spotify is working with what they call “AI Credits,” only available to select distributors; those uploading music have the ability to mark their credits as AI. This process is currently reliant on the transparency of the uploader, but in the same way as AI Personas, we will hopefully see a ripple effect, all in support of human-made, authentic music.

Spotify, I can’t believe I am saying this, but thank you.
