**Self-love is the cornerstone of everything.**
Eating disorders are an abandonment of the self. So is overworking. So is staying in relationships that drain you. So is ignoring your body’s signals until it screams.
We think these patterns are about control or discipline or willpower. They’re not. They’re about whether we’re willing to stay present with ourselves, to listen, to choose our own wellbeing even when it’s uncomfortable.
Coming home to yourself isn’t a one-time decision. It’s a daily practice of not abandoning ship when things get hard. It’s choosing to stay even when every part of you wants to check out.
That’s the work. That’s where everything else flows from.

There is something Acceptance and Commitment Therapy calls values clarification, the process of identifying what truly matters to you beneath all the noise of obligation and people-pleasing. ACT suggests that much of our distress comes not from failing to meet our own values, but from unconsciously living out values that were handed to us, often by people whose emotional needs overshadowed our own. It is a way of asking not just “what do I want to do” but “who do I actually want to be,” separate from the roles others have cast you in.
Ask yourself, “Is this my responsibility to carry, or is this an old pattern asking to be set down?”

Body awareness: Healing Inner Patterns with Somatic Psychology
Somatic Psychology studies how our bodies store and express emotional experiences that words alone can’t always reach. This field helps us understand that the body often develops its own “language” in response to stress or fear, and breath-holding is one of the most instinctive ways we brace ourselves against something that feels threatening or overwhelming.
Holding your breath may have became an early way of making yourself still — almost invisible — during moments of tension, and that your body may still be reaching for that same response even decades later. You might find it interesting to simply notice, without judgment, what feelings or thoughts are present the next time you catch yourself doing it — not to fix it, but just to get curious about what your body might be trying to communicate. These somatic patterns often carry real wisdom, and gently befriending this one could open up a meaningful layer of self-understanding around safety and the nervous system’s long memory.

Maitri is a Buddhist concept meaning loving-kindness or unconditional friendliness, first toward yourself and then radiating outward to others. It’s about meeting yourself and your circumstances with warmth rather than harsh judgment, recognizing that you’re doing your best even when things feel imperfect.

A concept from Dialectical Behavior Therapy called emotional regulation recognizes that our emotions and physical sensations are constantly giving us information, but sometimes we’ve learned to override or judge those signals rather than work with them. DBT teaches that we can learn to acknowledge these feelings without immediately judging them as problems to fix or weaknesses to overcome.

Window of tolerance: Finding Inner Safety
Polyvagal Theory calls the “window of tolerance” — the idea that our nervous system has a sweet spot of manageable activation, and when life (or our dreams) push us beyond that edge, we tip into either panic or shutdown. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, this framework helps explain why some experiences feel overwhelming rather than merely challenging, and why a nervous system shaped by early unpredictability can have a narrower window than most, leaving you perpetually scanning for the next avalanche even on an ordinary Friday morning.
Gently widening your window of tolerance might look less like a formal practice and more like noticing the small moments today when you actually are supported and letting those register in your body just a little longer than usual, because a nervous system that learned early that safety was temporary often needs repeated, gentle proof that it isn’t.

I get this question all the time: how can we really understand our emotional triggers behind binge eating? It's all about being honest with ourselves and creating a roadmap through journaling. Think of it as piecing together a puzzle where every emotion counts. Recognizing those feelings-like stress or sadness-can open the door to real change. Remember, you're not alone in this journey! Share your thoughts or experiences below, and let's support each other in finding healthier ways to cope. 🌟

I’ve been having more conversations lately with people in Austin who are using GLP-1 medications like Ozempic or Wegovy and feeling both hopeful and unsure at the same time.
These medications can meaningfully reduce appetite and food noise. But they don’t automatically change emotional eating patterns, stress responses, or long-standing shame around food.
I wrote a new blog post about how therapy can support the emotional side of this process — especially for those who want weight loss to feel sustainable rather than extreme.
If this is something you’ve been thinking about, you’re not alone.
