Texas Color Guard

The Texas Silks and Big Flags make up the Color Guard, and are members of the Longhorn Band. The University of Texas Longhorn Band, also known as the Showband of the Southwest or LHB, is the marching band of The University of Texas at Austin. The band performs at all in-state football games, for various Texas Longhorn athletics teams, and at special pep rallies and parades throughout the year. The band includes about 380 students, all of whom must register for a year-round course offered by UT's Butler School of Music. The Color Guard provides striking visual aspects to the half-time performances. There are two different opportunities to be part of the Longhorn Band Color Guard. The Texas Silks use traditional 6 foot poles and several different flags, and routines including some dance. The Big Flags use 9 foot poles and are comprised of non-musicians, double reeds, percussionists, brass and woodwind players. They have the most visible job in the band and do some amazing flag work.
