Show-and-tell from our Young Makers Club: Make A Toolbox

Our young makers got to learn basic woodshop safety skills and tools, and go home with their very own personalized tool box.
We’ve got another class on September 26, 2026 from 12pm - 3pm where you get to build an LED plushie. Designed for kids ages 7-12, this workshop covers the basics of simple circuits and machine-sewing skills. No experience needed, just curiosity and a willingness to get a little thread-tangled. All materials are provided and no registration required.

A little behind-the-scenes from our beginner fabrication class at Asmbly, where everyone got to go home with their very own steel, wall-mounted coat rack.

From signs and shelves to organizers and all the little details around the Laser Room, so much of what you see was made on the very machines you’re learning to use in our big lasers class.
And everyone left class with a first laser-made project of their own: a personalized business card box (or a box to put pieces of paper listing all the avoidant tasks you have piling up)

In 2025, Asmbly hosted 276 events across classes, camps, volunteer days, SIGs, steward activities, external events + more.
2025 reminded us that Asmbly is about much more than just access to tools.
It’s about people learning from each other, young makers discovering what they can do, and a community that keeps showing up to teach, volunteer, create, and share.
As we keep growing, we want to invest in the people and programs that make this possible, and build more partnerships with those who believe in Austin’s creative community too. 💛

A little leatherworking in action 👀
Here’s a look inside the stamping and tooling techniques leatherworking class where our students got to make a custom wristband. 🛠️
Meet Evan (he/him), a maker and 3D printing steward here at Asmbly!
Evan grew up around construction and woordworking and loves to build tangible things he can hold, a contrast to what he makes as a software engineer by day.
“My absolute favorite part is going from idea to code to physical object in a matter of a couple hours - it's magic!“
His piece of advice for new makers is to ask for help and seek out inspiration. “That drive to create is important! But try to love some of the process as well, so you can enjoy getting there.”

Our Young Makers Club Showcase was a chance to celebrate everything our young makers created throughout summer camp, including side tables, shields, and their very own board games. 💛
We also had live demonstrations in sublimation printing, leatherwork stamping, circuit building, and laser cutting, so kids and adults alike could learn something new and join in on the making.
The Showcase also came with some exciting news: Young Makers Club is continuing at Asmbly! It’ll be a space for kids to keep building confidence, learning new tools and skills, and bringing the projects they dream up to life.
