Join Dance Waterloo for Here We Are: An American Sunrise Kickoff, a free, all-ages celebration inspired by Joy Harjo’s poetry collection An American Sunrise.

The morning will include a family-friendly reading and dance-making activity, a community line dance, poetry writing, collage-making, botanical art, a collaborative mural, and community book recommendations exploring belonging, memory, home, and land.

Activity stations will remain open throughout the event, so you can arrive at any time, choose what interests you, and participate at your own pace. No dance, writing, or art experience is required.

This event launches An American Sunrise: A Season of Embodied Return, Dance Waterloo’s yearlong NEA Big Read project.

We are thrilled to announce An American Sunrise: A Season of Embodied Return, Dance Waterloo’s yearlong exploration of Joy Harjo’s An American Sunrise through movement workshops, book discussions, dance performances, storytelling, art-making, and more.

From September 2026 through June 2027, we will gather across Austin and Round Rock to explore belonging, memory, home, land, resilience, and return through experiences that invite our minds and bodies into the conversation.

The season begins with our free community kickoff:

Join us for storytelling, dance, art-making, and literary activities for all ages as we introduce the book and the many ways our community will engage with it throughout the year.

We are grateful to our community partners, Round Rock Public Library, Barnes & Noble, Pease Park Conservancy, The Trail Conservancy, BookWoman, Texas Book Festival, and the City of Austin, for helping bring this season to life.

Step into the rhythm and sharpen your skills with Tap Foundations for Dance Professionals, led by .

Designed for professional dancers, advanced movers, dance educators, and experienced performers returning to the studio, this class builds tap technique, rhythm, musicality, and confidence through foundational rudiments, technical exercises, and repertory inspired by tap legends.

Tap shoes are encouraged, but slip-on tap covers or tennis shoes are welcome.
