Veteran Spouse Network
Our work is guided by the understanding that veteran families rely on strong supportive communities while facing their unique challenges.
→ Where military and veteran spouses and families thrive
→ Find your community, gain support, and enhance your wellness
→ A nationwide program by Institute for Military & Veteran Family Wellness at UT Austin The Veteran Spouse Network facilitates a community of peer support for military and veteran spouses, partners, and families, providing opportunities to engage and connect to helpful resources and a community of support. This is your network, meant to incorporate your input, voice, and perspectives.
What happens when military family support does not fully account for immigration, cultural differences, or life in a new country?
Foreign-born military and veteran spouses are an important but often-overlooked part of our community. Along with the transitions familiar to many spouses, they may face added challenges involving immigration status, employment, professional credentials, language, belonging, and access to culturally informed support.
In our latest podcast episode, Lydiah Owiti-Otienoh, founder of the Foreign Born Military Spouse Network, helps us better understand these experiences and the gaps that still need to be addressed. We also discuss how military-serving organizations, community leaders, and fellow spouses can better connect with and support this community.

Supporting a veteran who is experiencing mental health challenges can feel overwhelming, especially when you are unsure how to bring up care without causing conflict or shutting down communication.
On Tuesday, September 22, from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CT, join the Veteran Spouse Network and Forge Health for our free virtual seminar: Guiding Your Veteran Toward Help: Lethal Means Safety & Therapy. Led by clinical experts and Marine Corps veterans Dr. Sheena Bice and Casey Lancaster from Forge VFR, this 60-minute session offers spouses/partners and family members practical communication tools for discussing lethal means safety at home and supporting a treatment-hesitant veteran in connecting with professional care.
This session is virtual, completely free, and open to all military and veteran families and military-connected communities. Register here: https://na2.hubs.ly/H07GCb60

Supporting a veteran through post-military transition, chronic stress, or invisible wounds can feel heavy, especially when you are worried about their safety and do not know where to turn. An important lessons we explore in our Veteran Spouse Resiliency Group (V-SRG) is that asking direct questions about su***de does not plant the idea in someone's head. It shows them that you see their pain and that they do not have to carry it in silence.
Our free, 6-week virtual V-SRG cohorts offer a confidential, peer-led space designed by veteran spouses/partners who understand the realities of military and post-service life. Together, we discuss communication, boundary setting, caregiver strain, and concrete crisis tools to support both your loved one and your own well-being.
Registration is now open for our three upcoming virtual cohorts starting this September:
- Wednesday Cohort: September 16 (10:00 AM – 12:00 PM CT)
- Thursday Cohort: September 17 (7:00 PM – 9:00 PM CT)
- Monday Cohort: September 21 (7:00 PM – 9:00 PM CT)

September is Su***de Prevention Month. For military and veteran families, reaching out with a simple, genuine check-in can be a lifeline. You do not need to have all the answers or know the perfect words to let someone know you care.
In partnership with We Face The Fight , we are encouraging our community to look out for one another. A quick text or phone call can interrupt isolation and remind a spouse/partner or loved one that they are seen.

Connection can start with simply having a space to reflect and be heard.
Cassandra Salas shares how meaningful it has been to watch veteran spouses grow through VSN’s journaling sessions. What started as a space to write and reflect became an opportunity for participants to learn more about themselves, connect with others, and, in Cassandra’s words, truly thrive.
Cassandra, thank you for the heart, encouragement, and sense of community you bring to VSN. We are grateful for the way you continue to help veteran spouses.

Change has a way of shifting more than our routines. Sometimes it changes how we see ourselves, too.
Maybe a role that once felt like a big part of who you are has changed. Maybe you’ve spent so much time focused on your family that parts of yourself have taken a back seat. Or maybe you’re simply in a season where you’re trying to figure out what comes next.
These are some of the conversations we make space for in V-SRG. Alongside other veteran spouses, you’ll have space to reflect on where you’ve been, what matters to you now, and what you want to carry with you into what’s next.
We have three groups starting next month in September. Learn more about V-SRG and apply here: https://na2.hubs.ly/H07jnvF0
