Hello my rubblebuddies, Alex aka Tōth here. I miss you all very much! I come bearing big news/gifts: my third album ‘And The Voice Said’ is here!!! 🎉It was co-produced with who also sings all over the album and features . Over the last 5 years in between making and touring two Rubblebucket albums with Kal & friends I was working on this new Tōth record behind the scenes. It’s a joyous and at times strange celebration of overcoming self-doubt and limiting self-beliefs. It has ecstatic trumpet playing and deep grooves, bops and a couple of sad songs. I was looking through old photos yesterday and I found these from when I was working on the “year of the banana” album art. I thought you might enjoy seeing how many different iterations we did before we settled on the final cover…… pretty cool!!

I can’t remember if we based the cover off of the lyrics of “moving without touching” or if it was the other way around, but either way check out how the amazing Haoyan Of America brought it all to life in our music video for that song. we re-created the album cover IRL in a studio and he used video effects & CGI to make it so that we would actually be bobbing on an ocean!

A little known fact is that as we developed the song, the lyrics started out shadow puppets on the wall / in a white box / bobbing on the ocean” which then turned into “shadow puppets on the wall / when the light falls / moving to the edge of the dark / we grow apart.. “ and in verse 2 “ocean levels on the rise / my two eyes / this is so much emotion “

themes of isolation, loneliness, division and the liminal place where those become safety within oneself, hermit life, surrender to the tiny things about moments that make life wonderful. moving without touching at the time meant to me feeling a magnetism toward each other, but not being able to connect for whatever reason… ? Hard feelings can become blockage. So you go within yourself and find the compassion and connection there, cultivate it, and once you have it strong enough that allows you to connect outward.

I’m thinking about that so much as we talk about building local communities, mutual aid, small acts of resistance that compound, keeping Love alive& taking care of each other in the face of this auth orit tarian crap-all situation we’re in.
