Chelsea set to sign veteran footballers Jordan Henderson, 36, and Danny Welbeck, 35, in surprise move

Chelsea is set to sign veteran footballers Jordan Henderson from Brentford and Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion F.C.
The pair, 36 and 35 years old respectively, have emerged as surprise candidates to bolster Xabi Alonso’s squad.

According to Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, an agreement on personal terms is almost done with both players.
England midfielder Henderson has a year left on his Brentford contract, but the Bees are willing to let him leave on a free transfer.
Ex-England striker Welbeck, 35, is keen on moving to Stamford Bridge and there is optimism from Chelsea’s side that a deal can be concluded.
The Blues are looking for experience because of an acceptance that their model of signing young players needs a “tweak” – according to influential owner Behdad Eghbali in April.

Welbeck scored a career-high 13 league goals in 37 games for Brighton last season, taking his tally to 51 goals in 201 matches since joining from Watford in 2020.

Welbeck signed a 12-month contract extension in March, with his current deal running until the end of the 2026-27 season.
Henderson made 34 appearances in all competitions for Brentford last season after joining from Ajax.

He made one substitute appearance for England at the World Cup before breaking his arm falling over advertising hoardings while celebrating their last-16 win over Mexico.

Sokoto Hisbah bans marriage introduction gifts and DJs at weddings

The Sokoto State Hisbah Board has announced a ban on a number of practices associated with weddings and other social gatherings in the state, arguing that the practices are contrary to Islamic teachings and societal morals.

Speaking to newsmen on Monday, July 27, the Commander of the Sokoto State Hisbah Board, Malam Usman Abdullahi Jatau, said the ban, which takes immediate effect, covers the practice popularly known as “Na Gani In So”, a marriage introduction custom in which a suitor presents assorted gift items such as cartons of soft drinks, bottled water, biscuits, sweets and kola nuts to the prospective bride’s family as well as DJ and Wazigidi music at ceremonies.

Jatau said the measures were introduced to promote morality and preserve the state’s religious and cultural values.

“We declare that these innovations (bid’ah), which are contrary to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), have negative consequences for any marriage conducted in such a manner because it departs from the teachings of the Prophet,” he said.

Jatau called on parents, intending couples and members of both families to fear Allah and avoid practices prohibited by the board.

“We call on the families of both the bride and groom, as well as parents, to fear Allah and desist from these practices. The board will carry out its responsibilities whenever these prohibited practices are taking place, especially when we are called upon to intervene,” he said

2027: Peter Obi’s business is to export job and import unemployment to the country. He can’t be president — Oshiomhole

Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has downplayed the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, stating that he “cannot” be the president of Nigeria.History

Speaking during an interview on TVC, Oshiomhole described Peter Obi as a trader who focuses on short-term calculations: “Peter Obi is a trader. Traders have short-term calculations, they are not into long-term projections. They are not wired to think about what the situation will be in the long run. Their turnover is within 3 months, maximum of 6 months.”

The lawmaker criticized Obi’s political trajectory, contrasting his past commitments with his subsequent party alliances: “The Peter Obi that was Governor of Anambra State is not the same today, because he was the one who said, as a matter of respect to the memory of Odumegwu Ojukwu, he would never abandon APGA.

“But before daybreak, once his tenure ended, Obi became a political wanderer, and he immediately found an alliance with perhaps the kind of people Ojukwu would never have related with. He did this when he became running mate to Atiku Abubakar.”

Oshiomhole argued that a leader with a manufacturing background is better suited to drive long-term industrial growth: “You look at his lifestyle to be able to project what he would do if he were to become president which he would not be, God willing.
“It is a manufacturer, an investor, an entrepreneur that understands how you can start a project, sweating for two to three years to build a factory, and then import machinery to install before you start producing.”

“Nigeria was virtually grounded. Peter Obi is not aware because he’s busy trading. I have said to people that Peter Obi’s business is to export job and import unemployment to the country. That is what he lives for. He’s a trader. He owns a shopping mall.”

"I want to appeal to the young people of this country. Burna Boy, Asake, Davido, and other successful Nigerians, I'd love to see you unite under one foundation to support the less privileged. Owning Maybachs and Rolls-Royces is fine, but you can also use your wealth to make a difference. The burden on the government is enormous."

— Nigeria's First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has appealed to Burna Boy, Asake, Davido, and other wealthy Nigerians to come together and help support the poor, saying the government alone cannot shoulder the country's growing challenges.
