I think nostalgia is one of the most powerful tools we have in design.

Not nostalgia in the sense of recreating the past, but that feeling of recognition—a room that feels familiar, layered, and somehow like it has always been there.

For these two rooms in an early 20th-century Mt. Washington home, that took two very different forms.

The sitting room became a literary, slightly eccentric salon—our shorthand was “Oscar Wilde”—with William Morris wallpaper, velvet, old leather and a little modern Gothic romance.

A few steps away, the family room shifts into linen and lake-house nostalgia: faded blues, worn wood, linen walls and Roman shades, and the easy feeling of summers near the water.

Different references, but they belong together because neither room is trying to feel new. They feel like different chapters of the same family home.

And that was the goal all along.

Swipe to the end for the before photos—the transformation is pretty incredible.
