Safe Passage
Breaking the cycle of poverty through education in Guatemala City.
On October 1, Guatemala observes Día del Niño, a date established to recognize children’s right to education, health, and a life of dignity. The observance traces back to a global call in 1954 and was written into Guatemalan law in 1997, following the country’s ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Safe Passage was founded on ensuring childrens’ rights to education, safety, love, health and opportunities to meet their greatest potential. In that vein, for the past 27 years, our students receive a qulaity education, daily meals, access to medical care, and support from social workers and psychologists, while our family programs keep parents and caregivers involved in their children’s growth.
As we commemorate Día del Niño, we celebrate all we have achieved in partnership with our students and their families. We also recognize how much more there still is to do to shift the systems that keep all children from accessing their rights in Guatemala.

As September, the month of Guatemalan independence, comes to a close, we wanted to share one of our favorite stories from the month. You may have seen our school band marching in our Independence Day parade, but here’s how it came together.
Donated instruments had sat in storage until music teacher Gabriela Benavente repaired and prepared them, and a group of musically inclined students said yes to something new. Early morning marimba practice and after-school rehearsals grew the group into a 30-student band.
In August, the Culture Committee invited them to lead Camino Seguro’s first Independence Day parade, with teachers Magaly Mejía, Gabriela Yax, and Margot Girón helping teach marching and formation. The whole community joined in, with sections representing Guatemala’s 18 departments.
Did you get a chance to see our band’s debut this year?

ExpoTEC is Safe Passage’s annual technology fair, where students in our Oportunidades program carry a project from an early idea to a finished, working platform. This year’s theme was De la Idea al Clic, From Idea to Click.
Behind each functional platform, students build technical and logical skills in software and database development, along with public speaking and English communication skills, over months of coursework before presenting and defending their projects to an audience.
Instead of a traditional jury, the students designed and built the fair’s own voting system, a website linked to a live database, so parents and guests could choose their favorite projects themselves.
This year’s projects included a parking management system, a restaurant tool, and CINEMAFLY, a streaming platform. Dereck, who presented the parking system, said the experience helped him trust more in what he is capable of achieving.
ExpoTEC 2026 also marked the first time the fair opened to the full Camino Seguro community, with attendance growing from an average of 70 parents in past years to more than 100 family members and guests.
Were you there this year? Tell us what stood out to you.

This year, our Social Studies teachers have trained in constitutional education, environmental policy, student leadership, democratic advocacy, and responsible electoral participation, through a partnership with Asociación Liderazgo Incidencia y Desarrollo , a Guatemalan association built to shape leaders capable of driving sustainable development across the country.
What teachers learn in these sessions carries directly into their classrooms. When an educator gains new tools for teaching civic engagement, that shift reaches every student in their classroom, shaping how young people understand their communities and their own role in Guatemala’s future.
We’re grateful to ASOLIDES for investing in the people who make this learning possible and for sharing our belief that education builds thoughtful, engaged citizens for Guatemala.

Guatemala’s Independence Day traditions came alive at Safe Passage. Students, staff, and alumni from our Oportunidades program carried the torch from the Municipalidad de Guatemala to our school, continuing a tradition that has connected Guatemalan communities since 1964. Our school band also performed in the desfile, representing the school in the streets of the city.
September 15th marks 205 years since Guatemala, alongside four other Central American nations, declared independence from Spain in 1821. For the students and staff at Safe Passage, these traditions are an opportunity to practice civic identity, teamwork, and belonging, values that align directly with our educational model.
Guatemalan leadership and student voice remain at the center of how we mark this date, and we are proud to see our community carry these traditions forward.
¡Feliz Día de la Independencia, Guatemala!
We’re so happy to see our Middle School building filled with the everyday buzz of students learning, creating, and moving through their day.
This space took seven years of planning and fundraising to build! We inaugurated it this past October, alongside our 25th Anniversary Celebration, with supporters from the U.S., Europe, and Guatemala there to celebrate.
Today, our 120+ middle schoolers have dedicated classrooms, sports courts, and spaces for arts, music, and STEM, all built around how they actually learn and grow at this stage of their education.
We just released our 2025 Annual Report, and it tells the rest of this story. Read it here: https://www.safepassage.org/annual-report-2025/

Yesterday, students at the Hanley Denning Experimental School headed to the polls to elect their new Student Council.
The process starts early, in the first weeks of the school year, when students in every classroom choose the leaders who will represent them. It’s a chance to practice civic participation from a young age, take on responsibility, and understand what it means to have a voice and a vote in a democratic space.
This year, two student-led slates ran for office, Las Luces del Bien and Unidos por el Bien, each proposing ways to strengthen daily life on campus. Their ideas ranged from mixed sports tournaments that build teamwork to healthier habits like brushing teeth after lunch, along with a push for better waste separation and recycling across the school.
Unidos por el Bien was elected as this year’s Student Council, and the whole school community celebrates every candidate, voter, and teacher who helped make the election possible.
