🌍 ICAHM ANNUAL MEETING 2026 | Keynote Speaker

We are pleased to announce Christopher D. Dore, RPA, MCIfA, as one of the keynote speakers of the ICAHM Annual Meeting 2026.

The Fallacy of Tangible Heritage: Changing Values in the Protection and Management of Heritage Resources

Dr. Christopher Dore is a professional archaeologist working at the intersection of cultural heritage, law and policy. His professional experience includes projects addressing archaeological site damage, looting, trafficking, and the protection and management of archaeological resources.

He has contributed to the development of professional standards and policy guidance through organisations including the Register of Professional Archaeologists, the Society for American Archaeology, and Heritage Business International, and frequently serves as an expert witness in legal cases involving archaeology and cultural heritage.

His research interests include community organisation in the Maya area of Mexico, invisible components of the archaeological record, and the use of geospatial technologies to understand spatial behaviour.

Dr. Dore is currently President of the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) and has previously served as President of both the Register of Professional Archaeologists and the American Cultural Resources Association.

We look forward to welcoming him to Oaxaca, Mexico, and to hearing his reflections on changing values and approaches to the protection and management of cultural heritage.

🟢 Verde: zonas relativamente bajas.
🟡 Amarillo: elevaciones intermedias.
🔴 Rojo: zonas más altas.
Podemos ver que la zona donde se encuentra la pirámide de la Luna es la zona más alta del sitio.

Beneath the surface of our ocean, seas, rivers and lakes lies an extraordinary part of humanity's cultural heritage, from ancient shipwrecks and submerged settlements to archaeological sites and living traditions and knowledge connected to water.

Often unseen and difficult to access, this heritage bears witness to centuries of voyages, exchanges and shared histories. Yet it is increasingly vulnerable to looting, illicit trafficking, climate change, pollution and other growing pressures.

On 21 August, the first International Day for Underwater Cultural Heritage calls for stronger international cooperation to protect this irreplaceable source of knowledge and intercultural dialogue, and to ensure that its protection is fully integrated into the sustainable management of oceans, coastal areas and inland waters.

This year also marks 25 years since the adoption of UNESCO's 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage, which provides a framework for international cooperation, responsible research and the protection of submerged heritage from commercial exploitation and illicit trafficking.

Together with Member States, researchers, local communities and partners, UNESCO is working to safeguard for the benefit of humanity and future generations.
