Izabella Maria Marzano, a senior biological sciences major who transferred to UMBC from Anne Arundel Community College, was one of more than 120 undergraduate and high school student presenters who packed the University Center Ballroom on August 5 for UMBC’s 29th annual Summer Undergraduate Research Fest (SURF). Marzano was presenting work she completed with Diana Elizondo, assistant professor of biological sciences, on certain enzymes involved in metabolic dysfunction resulting from a poor diet. The experience had been transformative.

On an early September afternoon, more than a thousand students filled the walkways between The Commons and the Albin O. Kuhn Library and Gallery. The occasion was UMBC’s biannual Involvement Fest, or iFest for short, an event for students to mingle and learn about the more than 250 student-led organizations at UMBC.

“We have academically driven groups, religious organizations, cultural organizations, groups organized around hobbies, sports and recreational groups, political and governing groups, intellectual sports, service and social action groups, and more,” says Abdoulie Sarr, the coordinator for student organizations in the Division of Student Affairs. “And the number of organizations has increased 14 percent since last year.”

One of the newest friendly faces recently spotted on campus is Jacob “Jake” Diaz, inaugural assistant vice president and dean of students in the Division of Student Affairs. Jake joined the UMBC community in May, bringing more than two decades of experience advancing student success, community well-being, and inclusive campus environments at public and private universities across the country. He is committed to developing a culture of care at UMBC, where students are part of a community filled with resources to help them thrive.

Mercedes Burns, associate professor of biological sciences and Spider-Man fan, has been studying arachnids for double that. Burns, who wore her spider taxonomy t-shirt to the movie, will tell us if these upgrades have any scientific merit.
