On October 6th, we begin Chapter 6 of our Storyworthy Food Series with an entirely vegan menu honoring Kena and her journey from Antigua to Kenya to Baltimore. Kena joined the Mera team last year, while a senior at the Baltimore School for the Arts, and always brings her incredible energy and passion to Mera. It’s easy to feel like you’re with an old friend when you’re around her. Her menu reflects her amazing spirit and connection to the people and places she’s encountered.
“Food is a story on its own; there’s always a teller, contents, and a recipient. All together, this creates a divine connection. This week I will tell my own story.”
The Storyworthy Food series is about the human story of where we come from, how we travel, and what we carry with us. Does a conversation change what we eat? Or does what we eat change the conversation?
Each month, a different member of the Mera team will curate a special menu reflecting the pieces from their life and journey that have shaped them and brought them to Baltimore.
Kena’s menu will be served alongside our usual Mera menu and will be available for dine-in and take-out from Tuesday, October 6th, through Saturday, October 10th.

Today, we kick off Chapter 5 of our Storyworthy Food Series, featuring Aisha’s Kuwaiti menu, inspired by memories of her childhood, enjoying bountiful meals at long tables with her entire family. The menu runs through Saturday, September 5 and is available for dine-in and take-out.
Murabyan | marinated shrimp on moong dal & basmati rice cooked with dried shrimp, spices, tomato, butter, served with tomato dakkous
“”Mu-Rabyan” means “with shrimp” in Arabic. This dish highlights Kuwait’s relationship with the sea. Personally, it reminds me of family trips to the coast, and of eating together after a swim under the hot sun.”

Marqouqa Fagaa | stew of mushrooms, dried lime, ginger, tomato, torn saaj, topped with shaved truffles
“This dish goes back to the 19th century, using mainly what was available in Kuwait at the time. Fagaa are native desert truffles that sprout underground in Kuwait and neighboring regions after the winter rains. It’s a tradition to go foraging, as a family.”

Gabbout | onion & sultana raisin dumplings, in turmeric & ginger tomato stew.
“These Kuwaiti dumplings in stew are a comfort food. This dish reminds me of my grandmother’s house, where it was always on the table for the weekly gathering.”

Join us on September 1 for Chapter 5 of our Story-Worthy Food Series, featuring Aisha’s menu honoring her journey from Kuwait City to Baltimore.
“I grew up in an intergenerational family house in Kuwait with my grandmother, uncles, and cousins. With so many people living together, there were many gatherings over food. The long table always had food for every generation in the family: traditional dishes such as Gabbout (Kuwaiti-style dumplings), a bucket of KFC chicken, and fried Indian snacks, like samosas and pakora. That mishmash of items on one table has stayed with me. This is a sample of my childhood memories of growing up in Kuwait. Some of the dishes are traditionally Kuwaiti, and some have Levantine influence, while others carry Indian influence, since Kuwait has a long history of trade with India.”
This special menu runs from Tuesday, September 1, to Saturday, September 5. Items are available for dine-in and take-out. A limited menu with the usual Mera items will also be available. ❤️🇰🇼
