Used in military operations to mark and target enemies of the state, lasers can cause permanent damage to one‘s sight and can function as both tool and weapon in police operations. This work orients the laser as a method of protest of such practices, aiming to usher in more ecologically resilient & compassionate realities.

Recordings of sonic weaponry play back in motion, automating an imitation of use in policing contexts. The original object of offense, called a long-range acoustic device (LRAD), is often used as a tool for crowd control and can cause permanent hearing damage. In this context, the sound artifact played in the space mimics the weapon but renders its actual harmful properties defunct. In this environment, the tool may be observed or experienced in larger quantities and with greater attention than actual deployment would allow.

Whiteout is an exhibition of works that re-purpose, protest, and/or break tools of surveillance & policing, rendering any corrective purpose defunct. With the growing development of automated technologies in use by law enforcement throughout the country the works of this exhibition reveal and exploit some of these tools confronting viewers with them head on.

Join us for this rescheduled event on Saturday August 29th, we invite you all to join us for our newest series ‘ILLUMINATE’ - an event that showcases local talent, bringing light to the surface, and to our feet. This event is about movement, music and all things DMV. Our selectors of the night include: DJ Zi starting the night off spinning soulful and deep house classics, and crossing genres as he takes us to different realms through music. Zi is a curator of sound, as sweet as pie, and attuned to the mother beat. We are pleased to invite Ether Pleaser, for his debut at The Compound. Ether Pleaser is a DC based party organizer (ETHERNET), producer, and DJ known for his dynamic blends between techno, jacking house, electro, acid, hard style dance music and club. He’s played now all over the mid Atlantic, at venues like Transmission (DC), Bossa Nova Civic Club (NYC), and Paragon (NYC). We are ecstatic to have him in the space and to bless us sonically with soundwaves made to move. A Baltimore and Compound staple - ILUSM, closes the building with a special set of their deepest digs from electro, to ghetto house, techno, baile and miami bass. ILUSM is known for their community organizing and collaborative projects in Baltimores night life scene. This set will not be one to miss! This event is 21+ and tickets will be available on RA and ATD.

in the material and the metaphysical, respective and independent of each artist’s temporal and spatial understanding of their practice of
