Helping Up Mission
Restoring hope. Rebuilding lives. For over 140 years… and counting! We are a faith based, privately funded, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
We provide programs and services to men and women suffering from homelessness and addiction. Our long-term, residential Spiritual Recovery Program is our flagship. Since 1995, we have helped hundreds of men break the cycle of addiction, poverty, and homelessness. The average homeless man or woman we serve has survived two decades of substance abuse and years on the streets. They come to us addicted, destitute, and dysfunctional — with no realistic capacity to recover on their own. For a man or woman in that condition, a “quick fix” doesn’t exist. Healing requires a holistic approach. By God’s grace, lives are transformed as men and women who have suffered for years — or in many cases, decades — on the streets rise up and regain their purpose, hope, and independence. As they do, all Baltimore is blessed along with them; our community experiences healing.

Today is World Mental Health Day.
Every person who walks through our doors has a story. When we take the time to listen, we begin to understand where someone has been, what they have experienced and what they need to move forward.
At Helping Up Mission, we believe every voice matters. Through faith, science and community, we walk alongside people as they work toward recovery and rebuild their lives.
Lived experiences heard. Real voices. Real change.

Behind the Scenes at Helping Up Mission: Meet Donna Mercer
Chaplain, Center for Women & Children
“Everyone is worthy of being heard.”
That belief shapes Donna Mercer’s work at Helping Up Mission. Through morning chapel, Spiritual Life classes and one-on-one conversations, she shares the love of Christ with women seeking hope and healing. For Donna, the work means walking alongside people as they find a better way forward.
Donna first came to Helping Up Mission as a volunteer when her own life was unsettled. Serving at the men’s campus and later becoming part of the women’s program deepened her faith and dependence on God. As she supports others in their healing, she continues to experience healing in her own life.
Philippians 4:4-5 resonates with Donna: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone.” That call to joy and gentleness connects with the care she offers through prayer, listening and time spent with each woman.
She sees the meaning of her work when a woman tells her, “I’ve read the Bible for years, but never really understood God’s love for me until this class.”
Alumni continue to reach out to share their lives and seek support, keeping those connections alive beyond their time at HUM.
Donna may prefer to stay out of the spotlight, but she hopes every woman she meets leaves with a glimpse of how God sees her: welcomed, loved and valued.
Hope Restored. Lives Rebuilt.
Joy isn't the absence of hard days, it's knowing where to find fullness even in the middle of them. That's where God meets us. This week, we're sitting with that word. Where have you found joy lately, even in a small moment?
