First published in 1990, Carol J. Adams' revolutionary work has engaged, enraged, inspired and challenged readers with its exploration of the interplay between society's ingrained cultural misogyny and its obsession with eating animals and masculinity. This iconic book, referenced in rock songs, feminist artwork and even a Law and Order SVU episode, continues to change the lives of its readers today.
Published to celebrate the book's 35th anniversary, this Bloomsbury Revelations edition includes a new introduction that reflects on how recent events continue to prove the relevance of this influential work.

"In 2023, PepsiCo spent millions of dollars lobbying the US government. According to one disclosure from last July, the Doritos and Tostitos maker spent $1.27 million on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) purchasing restrictions, the upcoming dietary guidelines, sweeteners, and food labeling, among other issues.
Where legislation is passed that has a direct impact on food multinationals, they have often fought back in the courts. In Mexico, companies including Kellogg’s and Nestlé have sued the government over the introduction of front-of-package warning labels and other restrictions including the use of children’s characters in marketing.
The labels—black octagons that warn about excess of sugars, sodium, trans fat, saturated fat, and calories in products—were rolled out in 2020. A handful of the lawsuits were accepted by the Mexican Supreme Court and are still being fought."

However, the food industry, with its factory farms and slaughterhouses, can also be considered a major contributor of pollution that affects the health of black and brown communities and low-income communities, because more often than not they locate their facilities in the areas where these people live. 'Swine CAFOs are disproportionately located in black and brown communities and regions of poverty …' say Maria C. Mirabelli, Steve Wing, Stephen W. Marshall, and Timothy C. Wilcosky of the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.[1]
Among the corporations that harm the environment and the health of black and brown communities and low-income communities are those that run industrial pig farms. Research has shown that these pig farms are responsible for both air and water pollution, mostly due to the vast manure lagoons they create to hold the enormous amount of waste from the thousands of pigs being raised for food. Residents who live near these factory farms often complain of irritation to their eyes, noses, and throats, along with a decline in the quality of life and increased incidents of depression, tension, anger, confusion, and fatigue."
Environmental Racism: How Black and Brown Communities are Disproportionally Affected While pollution is almost everywhere, certain communities are burdened with a disproportionate number of facilities that fill the air, soil, and water with contaminates. Typically found in black and brown communities and low-income communities, industrial polluters such as landfills, trash incinerat
