A little throwback to a wonderful evening with Modern Luxury DC!
It was an honor to celebrate alongside the other “Best of the City” recipients and to have Precise Home Management recognized for Best Household Staffing.

Modern Luxury DC has long highlighted the people and stories shaping the region’s luxury scene, from design and dining to travel, culture, and lifestyle. This was certainly one of those memorable evenings filled with great energy, wonderful people, and plenty of personality.

Thank you to Modern Luxury DC for hosting such an enjoyable event and for creating so many valuable networking opportunities. I look forward to attending more events and continuing to celebrate the people and experiences that make Washington’s luxury community so special.

A good household schedule should make everyone’s day easier, not leave the team wondering who is doing what.

It may sound simple, but there is a lot to consider: staff hours and days off, family commitments, appointments, guests, events, travel, and the inevitable last-minute changes.

A clear schedule helps everyone stay informed and accountable. Staff know what is expected, and principals can feel confident that the household is properly covered.

There are several great household-management platforms available now, and two of my personal favorites are EstateSpace and Nines. But even the best technology only works if the information stays current and the whole team actually uses it.

If scheduling has started to feel like a daily juggling act, it may be time to look at the system behind it and where your household could use more support.

There is no single “right” way to deliver exceptional private service.

That becomes very clear when comparing service in Europe and the United States.

European service often has deeper roots in tradition, formality and established protocol, while American households may prefer a more relaxed, flexible and less hierarchical approach. Neither is inherently better, every principal, family and household is different.

I came from a traditional British style of training. I later took those skills to Monaco, where I worked aboard a yacht for a Saudi family. Their customs, expectations and style of service were very different from what I had been taught.

It was not my place to correct them simply because their preferences differed from my training. My role was to understand, adapt, and deliver the standard of service they wanted.

There was one occasion, however, when the President was coming to dinner. I recognized that an aspect of the planned arrangements could unintentionally cause embarrassment for my employer and his wife. I brought out my White House protocol information and delicately explained the correct procedure.

My employer thanked me for alerting him.

That experience has always stayed with me. A good private-service professional knows the standards. A great one also knows how to read the household, adapt to different cultures, and recognize when-and how-to offer guidance.

We are trusted advisers and messengers. Our responsibility is to listen, understand, and respectfully present the best information we have. The principal can then listen, consider it, and make the final decision.

If you have worked in both the United States and Europe, what differences have you noticed, and how have you adapted?

Equestrian properties require a very different kind of household professional.

Having placed numerous private-service professionals throughout horse country, including Middleburg and Charlottesville, Virginia, as well as Kentucky, I understand that these properties demand a specialized skill set.

Anyone who owns horses knows that the beautiful stable seen in photographs represents only a small part of the daily operation.

There are paddocks and fencing to inspect, feed and supplies to manage, equipment and outbuildings to maintain, veterinarians and farriers to coordinate, and staff schedules to oversee, all alongside the daily care and wellbeing of the horses.

An equestrian estate is essentially a second operation running alongside the main residence. The right Estate Manager, Property Manager or domestic professional must understand how the two work together while respecting the routines, responsibilities and unpredictability of equestrian life.

Experience matters. Having someone who genuinely understands horses, the property and the lifestyle can make an enormous difference.

If your House Manager or Estate Manager disappeared overnight, would the rest of the household team know where everything was, and what to do next?

It is a question I always ask my clients.

Would the housekeepers, chefs and other staff know whom to call? Could they locate the water and gas shutoffs, alarm information, vendor contacts and emergency supplies? Would they know the procedures for the pets, vehicles and property if the family were traveling?

Too often, essential household knowledge lives in one person’s head. That creates unnecessary risk and can leave the entire team scrambling during an emergency or unexpected staff absence.

This is why every professionally managed residence should have a clear, regularly updated household manual. A secure household-management app can also make relevant information accessible to authorized team members wherever they are.

Personally, I prefer both: a secure digital system for everyday access and an up-to-date printed manual as a backup. It is always wise to be on the safe side.

A household should never depend entirely on one person’s memory. Good systems protect the principal, support the staff, and allow the home to continue operating smoothly when the unexpected happens.

If it has been a while since your household reviewed its manual and emergency procedures, this might be the perfect week to bring the team together and go through them.
