Today the California Supreme Court ruled against the thousands of HIV patients we represent against Gilead Sciences. We are deeply disappointed. The Court accepted Gilead's argument that courts shouldn't second-guess a drug company's decisions — even the decision to shelve a safer drug (TAF) for years to protect profits on a more toxic one (TDF).
We fought this case for our clients — people who battle HIV every day and deserved better. We take on the biggest, best-funded companies because it's right. This loss stings, but we know we stood on the right side of justice.

Congratulations to our colleague James Gotz and the extraordinary legal team honored with Public Justice’s 2026 Trial Lawyer of the Year Award for its work in Kashef v. BNP Paribas. After nearly a decade of litigation, the team secured a historic verdict for Sudanese refugees who survived genocide and other atrocities. The case marks the first time a U.S. jury has held a major international bank civilly liable for materially supporting genocide and mass human rights abuses committed in Sudan.

Safe communities depend on effective policing—and on officers using force only when necessary. A Madison police officer fatally shot a man after police say he resisted arrest, produced a knife, injured an officer, and was not stopped by a Taser. Cellphone video has intensified public concern, and an independent state investigation is underway. The facts must be examined carefully. The public deserves protection from criminals, but never unnecessary danger from those sworn to protect it.
