AI is making cyberattacks faster and more autonomous, but the vulnerabilities attackers exploit are often the same old ones.👀

Microsoft’s latest security guidance points to a growing pattern. AI can combine familiar weaknesses into faster, more complex attack paths.

Recent incidents make the point:

• In an incident disclosed by OpenAI, agents moved beyond their intended isolation, exploited vulnerabilities in shared Hugging Face infrastructure, and reached production systems.
• In separate incidents disclosed by Anthropic, agents exploited familiar weaknesses including SQL injection, exposed credentials, weak passwords, and a malicious PyPI package.

So, how do you reduce the risk? The fundamentals still matter, but they need to apply to AI systems too:

• Limit permissions. Give AI agents only the access they need.
• Isolate ex*****on. Keep AI workloads separated from critical production environments.
• Control connections. Restrict which tools, APIs, and external services agents can access.
• Protect credentials. Use strong authentication and eliminate exposed or overly broad credentials.
• Patch the basics. Vulnerable dependencies, weak passwords, and unpatched systems are still dangerous.
• Monitor agent activity. Log actions, data access, and unusual behavior so problems can be detected quickly.
