Here are some more details about Billy (Male Snow Bengal)and Nala (Female Silver Bengal).

Billy and Nala are a bonded pair and have been together their entire lives (6 years almost 7), so it’s really important to me that they stay together if possible. They rely on each other for comfort, groom each other, sleep together, and often call out looking for one another if they’re separated.

They’re both indoor-only, litter box trained, spayed/neutered, and very affectionate once they’re comfortable. They enjoy being around people and will often follow you from room to room just to see what you’re doing. They’re chatty and will meow to find you—or each other—and they’re very curious about everything going on around them.

They aren’t typically lap cats or fans of being picked up, but they’re big cuddlers on their own terms and love being near their people. They also enjoy belly rubs and don’t scratch or bite.

Billy is the quieter of the two. He’s a little shy with new people at first but warms up quickly and is incredibly sweet. He loves feather toys with bells, catnip toys (in moderation, he goes absolutely insane for catnip), bird watching, and curling up next to you for naps.

Nala is more outgoing and adventurous. She’s very social, loves climbing, enjoys tunnels, and absolutely loves playing fetch. She’ll bring toys back and wants you to throw them again. She also loves straws and toys that make crinkly or shaky noises. When she’s really happy and purring, she drools a little, which is one of her adorable quirks. She is quick and curious, so anyone opening an outside door should be mindful that she likes to investigate and will make a run for it.

Both cats enjoy interactive play, watching birds through the window, and spending time together. They’re happiest with someone who enjoys having cats nearby, whether that’s playing with them, giving them attention, or simply sharing the same room.

Because I don’t have experience with them living with dogs, children, or other cats, I can’t honestly say how they would do in those situations. Their ideal foster home would be a calm environment where they can stay together and continue their routine.

He has gone to a home

We received a request for help from a vet’s office

Here are the details:

“ I am a primary care veterinarian based in Richmond Virginia. My patient is Leo Tompkins, a 9 year old MN Bengal cat who presented for multiple health reasons. Leo is a very sweet boy in temperament and is very tolerant of being handled and touched. He is declawed (front paws only) but lives mainly outside as owners have young children. His blood work last week showed chronic kidney disease and he also has grade 3-4 periodontal disease. Today, he presented with a cat bite abscess on his bottom jaw that appeared overnight.

We presented owners with an estimate for treating the abscess (lancing and flushing it, pain relief and antibiotic care) and it is $1,011.26 which they cannot do. They are open to surrendering Leo but are unable to transport him very far. We have offered to care for Leo until he can go to a rescue if a rescue agrees that they can help. The estimate for the dental is $2800. Obviously in other areas this would be cheaper. Anyone interested in helping

We got him from friends of friends so only can approximate his age, around 7 or 8. He has been neutered and microchipped by our local vet and is in good health with no issues.

Habibi has always been an indoor cat, with the run of our apartment. He is clever and observant. He likes to play fetch and brings back the rubber scrunchie to be tossed again. He also loves jumping very high for play. He spends several hours napping each day and likes to find a sunshine spot on the bed or window ledge. He is curious and goes into the hallway to inspect and sniff then returns and opens the door to re-enter the apartment, by himself. He has had a little interaction with a relative's elderly dog and was not concerned by it, but mostly has been solitary. He has not had any interactions with other cats. He loyally follows us around and enjoys our attention but is very independent! He has not had interactions with children. We think he probably will be better with adults than children because quick movements make him nervous.

We have a scratchpad that he uses daily. We have had to warn him off from scratching furniture, so he would not be a good fit for a home that is not bengal cat ready. He scratched furniture less when alternatives were provided and sprayed with catnip. He is amenable to having his nails groomed when offered treats as a part of the grooming process. He knows his name, comes when called more than is expected from a cat, especially if the word "treat" is included and he is rewarded for coming.

When we first got him, he was very shy and we respected that. He then became comfortable and can be very vocal. He knows his dinner time (for soft food) and announces it to us at 10pm each night! He would be a good fit for someone that knows the habits of bengals and tolerates their occasional loudness and does not expect an overly cuddly cat. He occasionally sits on the chest or arm of a favorite person. He likes being rubbed on his head and under his chin. He is very handsome and gets lots of compliments from visitors!

We are in Brooklyn NY and would be fine with traveling some to get him a good home. We are available to answer any other questions as well.

Back-story: Canelo, a handsome, 3 year-old, neutered male bengal, was surrendered to Miami-Dade Animal Shelter, where (due to over crowding) he was immediately put on the euthanasia list. Being made aware of his imminent demise, volunteers for Great Lakes Bengal Rescue banded together, pulling him from the shelter 2.5 weeks ago and transporting him to a foster home in Safe Harbor, (just outside the Tampa), FL. Here’s what we know about Canelo from his Great Lakes Bengal Rescue foster family:

Demeanor: Canelo loves the company of humans. During the day he wants to be the center of attention and at night he wants to sleep with his fosters.

Canelo is compliant when asked to get into a carrier, and is very easy to handle during vet visits (you Bengal owners know how unusual this is). Not only has he charmed his foster family, but also everyone at the vet clinic, sitting in laps, allowing strangers to pick him up and hold him, and purring for affection and pets.

Canelo loves sunbathing in the foster’s catio, and playing with “his mice”. He gets along with the fosters’ well-mannered cat, but prefers the company of humans. He’s not crazy about thunder. Being in a secluded room is Canelo’s least favorite thing, which he will tell you in no uncertain terms.

Health Status/Behavior: Canelo is healthy based on physical examinations by a veterinarian and recent laboratory testing. He is current on well check and vaccines; and is FeLV/FIV negative. He recently had a whole-mouth dental cleaning and surgery on a tooth/root causing him pain on the affected side of his mouth.

Canelo likes Churu puree treat and prefers soft food to kibble. He likes Friskies seafood, especially chunky versions with gravy, more so than other proteins.

Canelo has had perfect litterbox usage. He chooses to use a litter box that is low in front, allowing him to walk in and out.

Canelo’s Ideal Forever Family:
• At least one family member that is retired or works from home.
• A family that wants a human-centric cat, who many describe as “more like a dog than a cat”.
• A family that is looking for a cat that wants to be in the middle of all family activities.

All who have met and spent time with Canelo (i.e., his transporters, his foster family, the vet and vet techs who have cared for him) describe him as special – a sociable AND easy going bengal!

His family dropped Canelo, a 3 year-old bengal, at the Miami-Dade animal shelter, where he was immediately placed on a euthanasia list. Being made aware of his imminent demise, volunteers for Great Lakes Bengal Rescue banded together, pulling him from the shelter last week and transporting him to a foster home in Safe Harbor, FL. Subsequently, a vet visit revealed he needs extensive dental work, which should allow him to eat without pain. The estimate for the surgery Canelo needs ranges between $1,154.50 and $1,405.35 (see estimate below).

We will be sponsoring a "sweepstakes" to pay this surgical bill. Each family that donates money -- by end-of-day Friday, July 24th -- to help pay for Canelo's surgery will be entered into a drawing; the winner will be randomly selected from all of Canelo's supporters. Back-story: Freya, a (estimated) 5- to 6-year old, front-declawed, spayed female bengal, was found as a stray and taken to the Lee County Animal Shelter (Ft. Myers, FL). Here’s what we know about Freya from her Great Lakes Bengal Rescue foster family:

Demeanor: Freya is a demure, good-natured, well-mannered lady. She is relatively docile and quiet as bengals go, crying only occasionally and at a low pitch. She is compliant when asked to get into a carrier, content when traveling in a car, and is easy to handle during vet visits.

As her trust of and confidence in her fosters has grown, Freya has become more relaxed, confident, and inquisitive. She now seeks out her humans for play and petting, happy to be the center of their attention.

Freya loves napping/sleeping beside her fosters (especially the “man of the house”). Her favorite pastime is sunbathing by a window. Her favorite toy is catnip-filled mice that squeak.

Health Status/Behavior: Freya is current on well check and vaccines; FeLV/FIV negative; and has had perfect litterbox usage. She entered foster care approximately 2 pounds underweight. Now tipping the scale at 8 pounds, Freya needs to gain another 1-1.5 pounds. Otherwise, she is healthy based on physical examinations by a veterinarian and current laboratory testing.

Inexplicably, Freya will not eat soft cat food. She is currently eating Hills EN kibble.

Freya gets along with one of the fosters’ cats, a gentle male who respects Freya’s boundaries. Through no fault of her own, Freya does not get along with the fosters’ assertive F2 female Bengal.

Her Ideal Forever Family:
• No young children.
• At least one family member that is retired or works from home.
• Only laid-back cats and/or dogs that will not be aggressive towards Freya and who will allow her to assimilate into the animal family at her own pace.

Freya had to fend for herself for an unknown period of time, during which she struggled just to survive. A loving family and a safe forever home for Freya is long overdue.
