Meet Carissa Aoki

What do ecology, storytelling, creativity, and social justice have in common? You’ll have to ask Carissa.

Carissa is an applied ecologist and educator who works at the intersection of landscapes, natural and human disturbances, and social justice. As the Area Head of MICA’s Ecosystems, Sustainability, and Justice program, she brings together her background in both the humanities and sciences to explore how we understand—and tell stories about—the world around us.

Carlos Raba is an award-winning chef, restaurateur, and community leader whose work is rooted in generosity as much as hospitality. Born in Sinaloa, Mexico, he is the chef behind Clavel in Baltimore, and the founder of Guardian Baltimore, a nonprofit that provides free after-school Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, uniforms, mentorship, and meals to local youth. Whether through food or martial arts, Carlos is dedicated to creating spaces where people feel seen, supported, and connected.

Baltimore artist Jeffrey Kent has spent decades shaping the city’s creative community as both an artist and mentor. Known for his bold, concept-driven work, he has also helped launch the careers of numerous emerging artists by creating opportunities for them to grow and thrive. Through his work as a curator, educator, and advocate, Kent has become a driving force in Baltimore’s contemporary art scene, leaving a lasting impact both on and off the canvas.
