Jones is an internationally recognised educator, currently holding the Richard and Elizabeth Case Chair of Jazz at John Hopkins University’s Peabody Conservatory and is Artistic Director of Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz ensemble. Previously, Jones was Chair of the Brass Department at Berkeley College of Music and served as President of the Jazz Educators Network.

Jones was lead trumpet for Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the SF JAZZ Collective, and is now with the Baltimore Jazz Collective. He is featured on three GRAMMY Award-nominated albums by Dianne Reeves, Nancy Wilson, and Gerald Wilson.

In this episode we discussed his journey as an artist, his church upbringing and how spiritually and eastern philosophy has shaped his life.

Yesterday, the girls and I had an opportunity to experience ‘s wonderful creations. Anyone that truly knows me, knows that i DO NOT PLAY when it comes to pizza or food in general. has the best tomato pie I’ve had in a very long time! Top 3 all around! And, I’m not saying this because I know the chef. Normally, I want all the toppings! In this case, they would have just been a distraction to a masterfully created and beautifully simplistic pie. Top notch ingredients perfectly assembled and balanced. Still craving it today! 👀

Couldn’t let today go without sharing my testimony.

I come from a beautifully blended family and while we love one another, we still passed trauma around like it cheese toast on a random Saturday morning. 😝 I’m sure most of you can relate and believe me
, I now know that it wasn’t anyone’s “fault”.

I’m fairly certain that growing up in a house without a real present father, affected us deeply. The women that were there I truly believe, did the best they could as they dealt with their own pain. (Mother, grandmother, aunt and sisters. I swore to myself that one day I’d be “a good man and take care of my wife and kids.”

This was just as, if not… more important to me as music. I wanted to find a way out of the pain and break the cycles.

To make a very long story short, I never realized that this was an impossible mission if I didn’t first heal. So, I lived a life of failure after failure, often leaving a trail of tears behind me. This was all masked by a relatively decent career as “sean jones”… the character that I created to protect “seanyboy”. (The name my grandmother gave me).

9 years ago, I decided to face myself once and for all. Welp, my higher power met me at that turning point. I then went on an almost decades long journey to find the root of my problem and I STILL only recently found the answer. (More on that later)

God sent two amazing people that I absolutely adore, Brinae Ali and Malaika. I soon realized that my love was limited and I had to find a love that I could only discover inside of me. So, I began to peel back layer after layer and I now know what it means to truly love.

I found that love initially by making the choice to be a father. Making a choice to give what wasn’t given to me. To look in the mirror so that I can show up for them day after day. Fatherhood made me a man and continues to do so! I thank my creator for the opportunity to be a father to two amazing young ladies and I will continue to grow and face myself so that I can give them what they deserve, a father that choses them daily! A man that will continue to face himself so that I can fully show up for them, mind body and soul!
