A MAGICAL EVENING -- Thank you to everyone who attended An Evening of Ordinary Magic. It really was a magical night! The evening highlighted the wonderful work being done at Helix AI & Medical Academy in Opelousas. At Helix, we believe in Ordinary Magic - the everyday moments of care, curiosity, and connection that can change the trajectory of a child's life. The event included dinner, a tour and a short program. It also featured a video produced and edited by the fifth grade gifted and talented students on what makes Helix magical. Special thanks to our sponsors too. We couldn't do it without you!

During the 2024–2025 school year, Baker High School had 16 core classes being taught through online courses because there were not enough teachers to staff those classrooms. Within months of Helix Community Schools beginning its academic management partnership, that changed.

At the start of the 2025–2026 school year, every student at Baker High School had a teacher in front of them in their core classrooms—not an online course and not a substitute sitting behind a desk while students worked independently. Students had teachers actively teaching, engaging them in rigorous instruction, monitoring their learning, and responding to their academic needs.

Students now participate in scheduled benchmark assessments throughout the year so we know where they are academically and where additional support is needed. Every Monday, teachers participate in data meetings where they examine student work and assessment results and use that information to make informed instructional decisions.

The transformation has extended beyond academics. Baker High School went from triple-digit fights to fewer than 20 within one year. Students are being held to high expectations while also being intentionally celebrated each week for their accomplishments, growth, attendance, behavior, and academic success.

Most importantly, our students are beginning to believe in themselves and in what they are capable of achieving.

Change does not happen overnight. But when students have teachers in front of them, consistent instruction, adults studying their data, stronger systems, high expectations, and a school community that celebrates their success, change happens.

And the growth is in the numbers.

👵🏽👴🏽 Breakfast With Grandparents at Helix Aviation Academy! ✈️

Students started the day with their grandparents as they shared breakfast, juice and quality time together. Good food, great company and meaningful conversations created memories that students and their families can cherish.

At Helix Aviation Academy, we value our families and the role they play in helping our students grow, thrive and succeed. By bringing families together, we continue to build a strong school culture where students feel supported, connected and encouraged.

Something powerful is happening in the City of Baker, and our children deserve to have their story told.

The City of Baker School Board selected and invited Helix Community Schools into a partnership to support the academic transformation of Baker High School and Park Ridge Achievement Academy. We did not arrive in Baker on our own. We were chosen to partner in this work, and I want to personally thank the City of Baker School Board for giving our team the opportunity to serve the children, families, teachers, and community of Baker.

One year later, the results are speaking.

The City of Baker is the number one growth school system in the state of Louisiana for overall Mastery and Above improvement.

Number one in Louisiana.

That accomplishment should not be diminished, overlooked, or passed over quickly. It should be celebrated because our children earned it.

Across the City of Baker, the percentage of students achieving Mastery and above increased from 10.3 percent to 15.6 percent, a 5.3 percentage point increase.

In ELA, Mastery and above increased from 15.9 percent to 24 percent.
