When we compare something like autism and being Deaf, you realize that actually— ableism is still there. Professionals often tell parents of Deaf kids not to sign because it will make them “lazy” and not develop listening and spoken language skills, but this isn’t true! Deaf kids are at high risk of language deprivation if they aren’t given sign language, especially early in life. Have you heard people say this before?

Some autistic kids love these and I honor that! I just often see parents teaching those instead of words that can help toddlers get their NEEDS met, with words you can use to request, comment, refuse, or play! We call these “core” words because you can use them often throughout the day. How many words can your toddler say (or sign?)
