A $40 million U.S. Department of Labor Pay-for-Performance Apprenticeship Grant will support efforts to expand Registered Apprenticeship opportunities in high-demand industries nationwide.

Led by FloridaCommerce, the initiative focuses on strengthening the nation’s defense industrial base and shipbuilding workforce while also targeting aerospace and aviation, advanced manufacturing, construction industry trades, and other ship- and boat-building sectors.

The performance-based model ties federal funding to measurable outcomes, providing incentive payments to Registered Apprenticeship sponsors as apprentices reach verified retention and progression milestones.

At the GNOu Summit: Workforce & Talent Pathways Conference, Louisiana Works Executive Director of Workforce Intelligence Jake Polansky joined Pathways With Purpose: Jobs, Demand & the Future of Work to discuss what those changes mean for workers, employers, and the workforce system.

Employers are vital partners in planning career pathways, and meeting Louisiana’s growing need for skilled talent will require closer collaboration across workforce, education, economic development, and business.

📊 Is training keeping pace with demand?

Louisiana’s public colleges and universities awarded an average of 1,037 electrician credentials annually from 2021–2025, up from 570 annually from 2016–2020. The state is projected to have approximately 12,000 electrician openings through 2034.

Carpentry shows room to grow, with approximately 10,000 projected openings and around 600 credentials awarded over the past decade.

These figures measure credentials—not people—and are not a direct comparison with projected openings. The preliminary projections are pending Workforce Investment Council approval.

The data helps show where training aligns with future workforce demand and where opportunities remain.

Louisiana Works’ LMI Briefings are held on the second Wednesday of every month, featuring insights from the Office of Research & Statistics.
