Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15 each year. The dates mark the independence days of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15, followed by Mexico on September 16 and Chile on September 18. The month sets aside time to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans nationwide.

At MCC Baton Rouge, we celebrate this month as part of who we already are. Our congregation includes Latino, Latina, and Latinx members whose faith, culture, and lived experience shape our church community every day, not just for one month. As an LGBTQ+ affirming congregation, we also recognize the Latino and Latina leaders, both q***r and straight, who have carried the church forward and pushed for justice in the wider world. Celebrating Hispanic heritage and celebrating LGBTQ+ inclusion are not separate commitments for us. They are part of the same call to welcome everyone as they are.

This month, we invite our whole church family to learn, listen, and celebrate alongside our Latino and Latina siblings in Christ. Todos son bienvenidos aquí. All are welcome here.

You don't have to choose between your faith and who you are. At MCCBR, both are welcome at the table.

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. (2 Corinthians 12) You do not have to be strong for God to work in you. The cracked and tired places are exactly where grace tends to pour in. You are enough, as you are.

We think about the people who drive past a church and feel a small ache, a memory of belonging mixed with the reason they left. If that is you, we want you to know the ache is not weakness, and the door is not closed. Whatever pushed you out somewhere else, there is a table here that was built with you in mind. No asterisk. No audition.

Take my yoke upon you, for it is easy, and my burden is light. (Matthew 11) If the faith you were handed felt like a crushing weight, that was not the yoke Jesus offered. His invitation was rest, not exhaustion. You are allowed to trade the heavy version in.
