McKinley Magnet High School's Senior Spotlight for the Month of October! - Taniyah Porter, Great Scholars Student

"Being at a historically Black school has allowed me to feel much more connected to my identity and where I come from. Being surrounded by Black culture, history, and people who share similar experiences has made me more comfortable with who I am and proud of my background. I’ve met people here who have challenged me, supported me, and helped shape the person I’m becoming. From the friendships and memories to the opportunities I’ve had to step into leadership, McKinley has given me experiences that I know I will carry with me after graduation. I’m proud to have spent my high school years at Mckinley and to be part of its history.

I am a part of JROTC, and it has probably been one of the biggest parts of my experience at McKinley. What I love most about the program is the people and the sense of responsibility that comes with being part of something bigger than yourself. JROTC has given me opportunities to grow alongside the same group of people, watching each other change, fail, learn, and eventually find our place. It has taught me a lot about discipline, teamwork, and what it means to show up for the people around you. I’ve made some of my best memories through JROTC, and I’m grateful for my role as Battalion Commander.

After graduation, I plan to attend the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and major in English. I want to keep writing, learning, and figuring out what kind of life I want to build for myself. More than anything, I want to leave room for change and let myself become whoever I’m meant to be.”

Congratulations to all of our Glasgow Mathletes that competed this past Saturday at Episcopal School of Baton Rouge's Mu Alpha Theta Tournament. They competed against 687 high school students from across Louisiana and won 3rd overall.

To deepen their understanding of the structure and function of cell organelles, students created a “dating profile” for an assigned organelle, highlighting its unique characteristics and role within a cell. Students then participated in a speed-dating activity, rotating through the class to learn about and compare different organelles through peer-to-peer teaching. Working With Ink Workshop:
Students participated in an ink workshop to uncover techniques, methods, and experience the process of ink painting and drawing. Inspired by Henri Matisse who used a long bamboo stick with a brush attached to the end to create large-scale murals and to draw from his bed or wheelchair later in life. This let him step back, feel the composition's rhythm with his whole body, and avoid traditional squaring-up or projection. Woodlawn Middle School Gifted & Great Scholars Academy Spotlight

This week, Ms. Andrews' 6th and 7th Grade Gifted and Great Scholars Academy students at Woodlawn Middle School were hard at work bringing science to life through their engaging project, ""Build a Cell's Metabolism Machine."" Students creatively designed and constructed models that demonstrated the complex processes that help cells function and survive.

Excitement filled the classroom as students proudly presented their final projects, showcasing both their scientific understanding and creativity. Using the RACE Strategy (Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain), students effectively summarized and responded to key questions related to the project, demonstrating their ability to communicate their learning with confidence and clarity.
