June 12 is Women Veterans Day — a day dedicated to the more than 2 million women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Here in Louisiana, our women veterans are our neighbors, our leaders, and our heroes.

Louisiana boasts a rich history of pioneering women who have served in the military and dedicated their lives to community advocacy. Here are some of the state's most notable women veterans:

Brig. Gen. Sherian G. Cadoria: A Marksville native, Cadoria holds the distinction of being the first African American woman to achieve the rank of general in the United States Army. During her 29-year military career, she served 33 consecutive months in Vietnam and commanded the first all-male Military Police Training Battalion at Fort McClellan, Alabama. Upon her retirement in 1990, she was the highest-ranking Black woman in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Margaret Jones Harling: A World War II Army Nurse Corps veteran, Harling later moved to Natchitoches, Louisiana, to build a distinguished career in psychiatric nursing. She and her daughter Susan were the real-life inspirations for the hit play and film Steel Magnolias, which was written by her son Bobby.

Anna Sanders: Based in Baton Rouge, she is a U.S. Air Force veteran, past commander of the American Legion Post 38, and a dedicated advocate for veterans. She has actively served as the President of Louisiana Women Veterans and on the board of the Louisiana Honor Flight.

Tonja Myles: An Army veteran and ordained minister from Baton Rouge, she was honored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as a national Trailblazer in the women veterans community. She is a prominent advocate for domestic violence survivors, substance abuse recovery, and mental health awareness.

Tanya Whitney: A 28-year U.S. Army veteran residing in Sorrento, she was also recognized by the VA as a national Trailblazer. She is actively involved with local groups promoting women in the military and serves on an honor guard for female veterans' funerals.

Lillian Hoover: Born in the 1920s, she enlisted in 1944 and became one of the first women to join the U.S. Navy during World War II. She remains one of the state's oldest living female veterans and participates heavily in state outreach programs.
