St. Established in 1844 and in the same church at Convention and Fourth Street constructed in 1894, we may be in the same location, but St.
James Episcopal Church is a welcoming, downtown congregation with a mission to serve Christ through worship, fellowship, education, pastoral care, and outreach to all. James is a church on the move! It's a place to grow spiritually, a place to make new friends, a place to serve God with your own special talents. For over 150 years, St. James has continued its mission of service to members of the parish and the greater community of our neighborhood, the city and the world.

On Sunday, September 27, we welcomed Sara Sotile, LCSW, from The Retreat at Quarters Lake to launch our "Good Grief: Loving Well Through Loss" series. Sara reminded us to give ourselves time, space, and grace during seasons of grief. She also answered questions about caring for yourself as a caregiver, why it's never too late to grieve, and how to advocate for your needs.
Join us this Sunday, October 4, for the second part of the series. Father Chris will lead a conversation about the gift of making your final wishes known and the process of funeral planning. It's not as scary as you might think! We'll gather in Coleman Hall at 9:15 am.

We danced with the giraffes, napped with the otters, and high-fived the tigers! But best of all, we got to spend some time together! Thank you to everyone who came out to fellowship with St. James at the zoo! 🐅🦒🦓

"I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me."
Community Connection Sunday was overflowing with joy, good food, and warmth. St. James served a hot breakfast to more than 100 guests and sent each home with a hearty bag from the food pantry, along with hygiene staples like toilet paper, toothpaste, and deodorant. We were delighted to welcome 48 volunteers, including our youth confirmation class and several families. CCS is a truly meaningful experience and a glimpse of God's kingdom, where we welcome and care for our neighbors. Be sure to join us Sunday, October 25 at 8:00 am!

God can make all things good! Children in Sunday school made beaded corn to remind them about how God used Joseph to save his family - and all of Egypt! - from famine. Jospeh's life had lots of highs and lows, but God used them all for His purpose.

This week, the St. Mary's group kicked off the 2026-2027 program year with a gathering of fellowship and faith! This fall, the group is using Kate Bowler's book Good Enough as a starting point for discussions about faith, scripture, seeking beauty in life, and living with imperfection.

Another month, another Bad Girls Book Club meeting! This week, the group met at La Madeleine's to discuss their recent read: The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife by Anna Johnston.
Join the Bad Girls Book Club next month for a lively conversation on My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. This book provides a deeper insight into when you should draw the line between making sacrifices for loved ones and when to put yourself first.

Last week our James Gang got to tour one of Baton Rouge's most iconic homegrown brands, Marucci Bats and Sports Equipment. The group got a behind the scenes look at how they craft the bats, gear, and technology that shape America's favorite pastime! Did you know Marucci Bats are the Official Bat of the MLB? ⚾

Congratulations to the choirs of St. James on a wonderful Music Ministries Sunday!
On Sunday, the St. James and St. Cecilia Choirs were officially back on duty, singing some of the most glorious music in our tradition at the 10:30am service and the first Evensong of the season. Special prayers for our musicians were accompanied by the soaring voices of choristers age 8-80. Helen Smith was also inducted as the new Head Chorister of the St. Cecilia Choir.
