Our Lady of Sorrows is often depicted with seven swords piercing her heart, representing the Seven Sorrows of Mary— moments of profound suffering that Mary experienced in union with her Son, Jesus.

The Seven Sorrows of Mary:

🗡️ The Prophecy of Simeon — Simeon foretold that a sword of sorrow would pierce Mary's heart.

🗡️ The Flight into Egypt — Mary and Joseph fled with the infant Jesus to protect Him from King Herod.

🗡️ The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple — Mary experienced three days of anguish before finding Jesus.

🗡️ Mary Meets Jesus on the Way to Calvary — Mary encountered her suffering Son as He carried His Cross.

🗡️ The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus — Mary stood faithfully at the foot of the Cross as Jesus gave His life.

🗡️ Jesus Is Taken Down from the Cross — Mary received the lifeless body of Jesus into her arms.

🗡️ Jesus Is Laid in the Tomb — Mary experienced the sorrow of seeing her Son placed in the tomb.

Through every sorrow, Mary remained faithful.

And there is something beautiful about this devotion:

Mary’s suffering always leads us to Jesus.

When we are afraid, Mary understands.
When we are grieving, Mary understands.
When we don't understand God's plan, Mary understands.

She reminds us that faith does not mean we will never suffer. It means we can continue to trust God even in the midst of our suffering.

Today, September 8, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary—the birthday of the woman chosen by God to become the Mother of His Son, Jesus.
