57% of small business loan applications get fully funded at community banks. At large national banks, that number drops to 43%.

That 14-point gap comes from the Federal Reserve's 2026 Small Business Credit Survey, and it tells you something important about how capital actually reaches the businesses that need it.

Large banks process volume. They run applications through standardized models designed for scale, and those models work well for borrowers who fit neatly into a template. But a contractor who just landed their biggest project, a restaurateur expanding into a second location, a manufacturer retooling for a new product line, those stories don't always score well on an automated screen.

Community banks underwrite differently. We sit across the table from the business owner. We know the local market, the competitive landscape, the seasonal patterns that affect cash flow. That context turns a borderline application into a funded one, because we can see what the algorithm misses.

The same Fed survey found that 31% of small business loan applicants walked away from larger banks with nothing. For many of those businesses, creditworthiness wasn't the problem. They needed a lender willing to understand their situation before making a decision.
