Overcoming Learning Struggles with Manipulatives: The Abacus

I learned to count and multiply in the 70s using an abacus, the item in the cover photo. First, it is a toy. The counting machine is very colorful and catches they eye fast. Do you remember eye-catching, colorful props that your teacher used to teach you how to count? Did they allow you to go to school Carnivals and Dances when you showed a big improvement in your attitude and your classes? Vividly reminiscing, those were the days. Our parents continuously telling us how we could do what ever you set your mind to do. The principals and teachers who let you wear your superman or superwoman costume just to help you put your Super Power Mode into action. Shucks, sometimes they would put on a costume too. Yeah, I caught that little smile. With Common Core and the need to teach so many Educational Clusters of Information in different classes, it can be hard to get the Eagle’s Eye view of WHY we began to form schools, or colonies, to Reproduce Ourselves (The Ability to take on Responsibility) in the capable hands of our Youth. You see Standards and Keeping Up with the Curriculum are very important elements in staying ahead in the 21st Century Classroom, but so is having fun while mastering the content. Yet, if the fun, excitement, and social areas are not met, the task of each one reaching one student is kinda stuck in the mud. We’ve pledged to Step Up and meet the Needs of our clients who are hungry for knowledge. We’re talking about a kid hungry for opportunities to co-create her own curriculum and make fun, well-researched contributions as to THE BEST WAY TO REACH HER GENERATION.
