Teaching Beginner System Circles and Frogs
This past weekend my current Level 1 Apparatus group learned how to safely guide a first-timer through the classical beginner system. Here we go through how to spot the black straps to get a new client onto circles & frogs. Do you remember learning this spot? It can be so intimidating at first but with practice it becomes easy, seamless, and, most importantly, safe for your first-time clients that may not quite understand all the movement physics of the reformer.
Teaching Swan On Ladder Barrel
This is a great exercise for learning extension with engagement of the legs for support.
Here Juliet teaches three progressions from most supportive to most challenging. (Important! Never let clients hang over the barrel. It can be very dangerous for the lower back.)

Angela and I had a great time yesterday working out with Phoebe Higgins at Grasshopper Pilates in NYC. Phoebe led us through some of the guillotine apparatus exercises—a real treat since I don’t have one of my own!

New! We’ve added three new mat classes to the schedule. Our mat classes are 45 minutes long, only $15, and good option for both beginners and the more experienced. They’re a great way to fit in a Pilates workout on the go! See the link in our bio or visit beaconpilates.com to book!
Swan on the ladder barrel is such a supportive version of extension. As long as you use your legs and engage!
Here I teach sisters Zain & Eman doing this for the first time.

Introducing our newest instructors Neclâ, Tess, and Caroline! They will be teaching in our studio starting this September and we’re so thrilled to welcome them to Beacon Pilates. Learn more about each of them below and click on the link in our bio to book a class!
Neclâ
Neclâ began her pilates journey in her native Manhattan as a solution to improve her scoliosis. She was drawn in by the dancing quality of the movement and control that comes with Pilates (and stayed for the strength and flexibility). When she started assisting her teacher in class she found further happiness in helping others to learn and understand the routine. Since her first class almost a decade ago, she is now a certified classical mat Pilates instructor, completing her teacher training through Beacon Pilates. She still loves welcoming newbies to Pilates and helping people to discover and harness their own control and strength to build their best selves.
Tess
Since moving to the Hudson Valley in 2021, I discovered a passion for Pilates and began training with Angela, of APG Pilates, and Juliet, of Beacon Pilates. Their dedication to the classical method inspired my teaching journey. I am a certified classical mat Pilates instructor, committed to helping clients build strength, confidence, and body awareness through authentic Pilates practice. My classes are rooted in the five principles of classical Pilates—breath, concentration, control, precision, and flow. These principles help to build a stronger body while also developing a deeper connection between mind and movement. My goal is to create a welcoming environment where every client feels supported and challenged. I look forward to helping you move with greater strength, balance, and purpose.
Caroline
Caroline is a certified classical Pilates instructor with 15+ years of experience. After moving to the Hudson Valley, Caroline taught all levels at APG Pilates in Newburgh NY. Before that she was a Senior Pilates instructor at Equinox, Pure Yoga, and several physical therapy offices and gyms across New York City. Caroline is also co-owner of The Cheese Shops in Beacon and Cold Spring.

Curious about becoming a classical Pilates teacher? This recent clip of my Level II Apparatus class learning how to teach Short Spine actually illustrates a lot of what it takes.
1. Effective Pilates teachers put the person before the technique. Learning how to listen, see, and intuit is essential to understanding your client’s needs. Here, while we’re setting up to do Short Spine, I point out how to know if a client is ready to do this exercise.
2. Pilates teachers also need to communicate in many different ways to teach the method correctly and safely. In this clip I use verbal cues, spotting, and touch cues to show how to move a client safely through the complicated steps of this exercise for the first time.
3. And finally, showing the detailed breakdown in this clip of just one half of one sequence on one apparatus should give you the idea of the time, effort, and dedication it takes to become a certified classical Pilates teacher. But the end result is more than worth it. Whether you’re an established fitness professional, a contemporary instructor looking to bridge your skills, or a complete beginner, our teacher training program will give you the skills, confidence, and support for all your future goals.

Long Stretch Series (minus Long Back Stretch)
This series is so good for strengthening shoulders. Learning how to push against the footbar to engage your upper back and shoulder muscles for support is the key to keeping it out of your wrists and neck. My clients Zain and Eman are such great listeners and tackled this series so well!
