🏡 5 Questions to Ask Yourself If You’re Thinking About Downsizing or Relocating After 55

Once we hit retirement age, many of us start thinking about what we want the next chapter of life to look like—and where we want to live it.

Does your current home still fit the life you’re planning? Would you be happier with less space and maintenance? Closer to family? Somewhere warmer? Or does staying right where you are still feel like the best choice?

If you’re starting to think about what’s next, here are five questions to ask yourself:

❤️ 1. What would I miss most about my current home?
Think beyond the house itself: your neighbors, garden, community, privacy, routines, and proximity to friends and family.

🔨 2. What parts of my home are becoming a burden?
Consider maintenance, repairs, utility costs, unused space, stairs, yardwork or anything else that feels harder than it used to.

🔑 3. Will this home still work for the life I want five or ten years from now?
Think about accessibility, mobility, finances, lifestyle and how you’d like to spend your time.

📍 4. If I moved, what would I want my next home and community to offer?
Less maintenance? More walkability? A warmer climate? A condo near restaurants and activities? More space for family? Getting specific can help you determine whether moving would actually improve your quality of life.

🗓️ 5. Would planning a move now give me more choices later?
Understanding your options before circumstances force a decision can give you more time, flexibility and control.

Asking these questions will help you clarify your feelings about your living situation and decide what you want your next chapter to look like.

Why are the traffic lights still out at East Caldwood at Calder and Phelan? This is NOT safe and I just saw a near collision! Instead, just some road rage. 🤯 Too many lanes to calculate on Phelan particularly with turning lanes. Just asking.

🏡A house sitting vacant is a house at risk.🚨🚑

You may be thinking:
*We don't need the money right now, let's see what the market does.
* Mom/Dad is comfortably settled into their new living arrangement and there is just too much stuff to sort through right now.
* I don't have time to deal with that property from afar.
* I am overwhelmed by the thought of the repairs needed to bring it up to date.

But I want you to consider the true cost of holding on to a home that sits vacant and mostly unattended. Deferred maintenance, unexpected repairs, insurance, property taxes, utilities, mortgage payments-the real carrying costs are often more than you think and can deplete an estate or savings faster than you think.

And don't forget there is an opportunity cost in this scenario as well. Could that money be put to better use elsewhere? To fund senior care or other investments?

A great place to begin is with all things paper. Go room by room and gather old bills, magazines, manuals, greeting cards, and stacks of mail. Sort everything into three piles:
🗂️ Keep
🗑️ Shred
♻️ Recycle

Paper clutter is often easier to tackle than sentimental belongings and seeing quick progress can build the momentum you need to keep going.

Remember: downsizing is a marathon, not a sprint. Small wins today can make a future move much less overwhelming.
