Day 5 of Seraphina’s Egypt tour brought her to Edfu and Kom Ombo! First up was the Temple of Edfu, dedicated to the falcon headed god Horus and built over an astonishing 180 years during the Ptolemaic period. It survived remarkably intact, thanks in large part to centuries spent buried under protective sand. From there, she visited Kom Ombo, a striking temple split perfectly in half: one side honoring Horus, the other devoted to Sobek, the crocodile god. Inside, she marveled at rare carvings that reveal just how advanced ancient Egyptian knowledge of medicine and surgery truly was. Just outside the temple, a visit to the nearby crocodile museum offered a look at mummified crocodiles, preserved in honor of Sobek himself. Every stop on her trip has revealed another layer of just how sophisticated ancient Egyptian civilization really was.

There’s a moment on every gorilla trek that stops you in your tracks: when a silverback is just a few feet away, and you feel, unmistakably, that he’s studying you as much as you are him. Today, on World Gorilla Day, we’re celebrating that connection. Mountain gorillas were once predicted to go extinct by the end of the 20th century, but decades of conservation work have helped their numbers steadily climb, one of the great comeback stories in wildlife conservation. Every trekking permit issued helps keep that momentum going, funding rangers in the forest and supporting the communities who have always protected these habitats. It’s proof that travel, done thoughtfully, can be part of the solution. Here’s to the gorilla families quietly going about their days in the misty highlands, and to all the generous humans working to keep it that way.

Days 3 & 4 of Seraphina’s Egypt tour took her deep into Luxor! She flew an hour from Cairo to board the gorgeous Historia the Boutique Hotel Nile Cruise, her home for the next stretch of the journey, before diving straight into Karnak Temple, an awe-inspiring complex built and expanded by ruler after ruler across centuries. From there, she wandered Luxor Temple, home to towering statues and a wild layer of history. Early Christians once used it as a hideout, painting saints over ancient hieroglyphics and even chiseling away the faces of Egyptian gods. Day 4 took things to a new level at the Valley of the Kings, where Seraphina descended into the tombs of Rameses I, III, and IV, their walls bursting with vivid, elaborate hieroglyphics. She also stepped into King Tutankhamun’s tomb, smaller since his death was unexpected, but his mummy still rests there in a pressurized chamber. Absolutely phenomenal doesn’t even cover it. Next stop was Hatshepsut’s Mortuary Temple, a tribute to Seraphina’s favorite female ruler in ancient Egyptian history and every bit as breathtaking as she’d hoped. As the sun set, the boat cruised through the Esna Lock and sailed off into the night🌅

The Okavango Delta is a destination of extraordinary beauty and excitement. Each year, life-giving floodwaters from the highlands of Angola transform the heart of Botswana into a vast oasis of winding channels, palm-fringed islands, and thriving wildlife. One moment you could be gliding silently through the reeds in a traditional mokoro, the next you could be in your safari vehicle observing a leopard seeking shade from a tree. Elephants cross the waters, lions patrol their territories, fish eagles soar overhead. Every day brings a new adventure, and every turn reveals something unexpected.

Today is World African Wild Dog Day, and we're celebrating one of Africa's most remarkable - and endangered - predators. Known for their striking coats (earning them the named Painted Dogs), incredible teamwork, and impressive hunting success rates, African wild dogs are among the continent's most efficient hunters. Living in highly social packs, they care for one another, share food, and work together to raise their young. Despite their resilience, African wild dogs face significant challenges from habitat fragmentation, human-wildlife conflict, and disease, making conservation efforts more important than ever. If you’re lucky enough to witness these wild dogs while you are out on safari, hopefully you are able to see it as a special privilege and a reminder of the importance of protecting Africa's wild spaces.

Africa is a birder’s paradise. The continent is home to between 2,300 and 2,500 different species, hosting over one-fifth of the world's total bird diversity. Pictured here are a few of Africa’s most iconic birds. In order of appearance: the Secretary Bird, the Lilac-Breasted Roller, the Shoebill, the African Fish Eagle, and the Red-Billed Hornbill. Birds may not be the main reason most travelers decide to go on a safari, but once you encounter them in nature, it’s hard not to be fascinated by them!

Today is World Elephant Day, a moment to celebrate one of Africa’s most intelligent and deeply important species. Elephants are a keystone species, meaning their presence has a disproportionately large impact on the ecosystems around them. By shaping landscapes as they move (knocking down trees, creating water access routes, and dispersing seeds) they help maintain the balance of entire habitats that countless other species depend on. Across Africa, elephants are essential to healthy ecosystems and biodiversity, but they also play a powerful cultural and ecological role that connects people, wildlife, and wild places. Protecting elephants means protecting the future of Africa’s wilderness.

Whether it’s the distant roar rumbling across the savanna, a pride resting beneath an acacia tree, or the thrill of a sighting on safari, lions have a way of captivating us like few other creatures can. On this World Lion Day, we are stopping to appreciate these majestic animals – who continually face challenges that threaten the species. Conservation efforts across Africa are helping to protect lion populations, but their numbers are still dwindling. Every lion sighting is a reminder of just how much conservation matters.
