The LG 97 has arrived. Here's Definitive Expert Scott's first take: The showroom crew didn't want to wait until next week for our technicians to get a new toy up and running. So, first thing Saturday morning we installed LG's magnificent 97" G6 OLED here at the showroom. The depth of color and contrast and those perfect OLED blacks across this large a canvas makes for an incredibly compelling image. After I settled into doing some setup, it also triggered a memory of an oft-heard lament about large televisions: 'this is too big for a normal room.' My view is that such a mindset has more to do with one's perception of its physical presence in a room than its suitability to the viewer's distance from it. If we look at how far back you 'should' be sitting from a 97" image, the field-of-view guide we have in our Projector Shootout Lab (code name: Burbank) finds that most folks prefer a horizontal field of view of about 50 degrees. By that metric, you'd be just under 8' back from a 97" video display. And yet, viewing distances in the United States historically average about 11'. For further perspective, that just under 8' position relative to that 97" display equates to sitting about two-thirds of the way back in a commercial movie theater. From 11', you're practically in the lobby looking through a hole cut into the back of the auditorium. All kidding aside, don't let the Joneses tell you your TV is too big. Having a near projection-sized image in a direct-view display with perfect black level and perfect off-axis color and contrast make this a perfect choice when you want an immersive viewing experience in a more traditional living space. So, this is a new toy and we're still working to extract as much quality out of it as we can. But it is definitely ready for its close-up.
