Bellingham’s affordability crisis is squeezing seniors, and the numbers are sobering.

A recent Cascadia Daily News (CDN) story reports that nearly half of Whatcom County’s older households do not have enough income to afford the basics. According to United Way’s ALICE data cited in the article, a single person age 65 or older in Whatcom County needs more than $42,000 per year, or $3,530 per month, to get by, but 48% of Whatcom County seniors live under that threshold. Seniors report having to choose between rent, groceries, transportation, utilities, health care, and staying connected to their community.

And unfortunately, housing is often the biggest expense. A 2023 city report cited by CDN found that 63% of senior renters in Bellingham are cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than one-third of their income on housing. And 1,300 senior renters are severely cost burdened, spending 50% or more of their income on housing.

People on fixed incomes with rising housing costs are vulnerable to homelessness. In fact of the 650 households counted during Whatcom County’s 2025 point-in-time count, 103 households were seniors.

As Bellingham and Whatcom County work to address the housing affordability crisis, seniors cannot be an afterthought. We need more affordable senior housing and infrastructure near transit, health care, grocery stores, and community services.

The Welcome Home Committee is made up of volunteers that assist Gardenview Village guests when they are moving to permanent housing. We collect donated household furnishings for them and help them move!

If you have any gently used small furniture (end tables, lamps, comfy chairs, book shelves) kitchen appliances (Coffee maker, microwave, tea pot, pots and pans, dishes) or towels and bedding that you would like to donate, please text Debbie 360-920-0981.
