College Capable ≠ College Ready
A student can be college capable with good grades, rigorous coursework, and strong test scores.
But are they college ready?
✅ Ready to manage their time
✅ Ready to advocate for themselves
✅ Ready to handle setbacks
✅ Ready to navigate independence
College capability may earn admission. College readiness fuels success.
Let’s prepare students not just to get into college, but to thrive once they get there. Does your student need a little extra help? Threshold Coaches can help your student get college ready, not just capable!

College-Ready vs. College-Capable: The Hard Question for ADHD Families. This one might be uncomfortable… but it matters.
A student can look college-ready:
✅ Good grades
✅ Accepted into a school
✅ Smart, motivated, full of potential
…but that doesn’t always mean they’re college-capable yet. Especially for students with ADHD. Because capability isn’t about intelligence. It’s about whether they can consistently manage the demands of independence.
Important questions to ask… can they:
• Wake themselves up and get to class without constant prompting?
• Manage deadlines when no one is checking in?
• Regulate distractions when everything is unstructured?
• Recover from missed assignments without shutting down?
• Advocate for themselves when they’re struggling?
Some ADHD students are developmentally 2–3 years behind in executive function.
It’s not in ability, but in readiness for independence.
So here’s the real question parents need to ask:
“Are they capable of handling college right now, or do they still need more support, structure, and skill-building first?”
Because sending a student who isn’t ready for independence yet can lead to:
⚠ burnout
⚠ loss of confidence
⚠ academic probation
⚠ feeling like they “failed” when they didn’t
And that’s not a motivation issue.
It’s a timing and support issue.
TRUTH: Delaying college, starting smaller, or building life skills first is NOT falling behind. It’s setting them up to succeed.
ADHD students don’t need lower expectations, they need the right timeline and scaffolding to meet them. Different pace. Same potential.
