When I was five years old, I asked my mom for wheat bread. I didn't want it for the taste; I thought if I changed my sandwich, I’d finally get a seat at the "cool" table in my small Vermont town. Growing up on the "wrong side of the tracks," I spent the next two decades trying to prove I had "made it." I climbed the banking ladder to Vice President, bought the coveted "perfect" house, and lived a life that was perfectly cohesive, perfectly gray, and perfectly exhausting. After years in the corporate boardroom and a life-altering transition, the view from the top finally cleared. I realized that the 3-year-old kid who dressed up like Cyndi Lauper for Halloween wasn’t "crazy"—she was the only one who knew who she was before the world told her to conform. I decided to stop building for the "next buyer" and started building for my soul. I moved across the river to New Hampshire, traded my executive title for myself. Learned how to use some tools, and "de-renovated" my home and my life. Today, my living room is pink, my couch is floral, and my kitchen was pieced together for using Marketplace finds and a bit of creative magic. This journey taught me something that most of the real estate industry forgets: A house is a financial asset, but a home is a soul asset.
