One of the biggest misconceptions about brand strategy is that it's a creative exercise.
It's not.
Creativity comes later.
Brand strategy begins with the willingness to uncover what's true about an organization before deciding how it should be presented to the world.
That's why the process can feel uncomfortable. It challenges assumptions, exposes inconsistencies, and often requires letting go of ideas that no longer fit.
But that's also where transformation begins.
The most aligned brands came from the most vulnerable work of digging into identity.
The work beneath the surface is what gives everything above it strength.
That's why I believe:
The most aligned brands came from the most vulnerable work of digging into identity.
It begins with the courage to uncover what's true.
Everything else is built from there.

There are parts of building a business that everyone gets to celebrate.
The launch. The growth. The milestones. The wins.
And then there's the work that almost no one sees.
The hours spent wrestling with difficult decisions.
The moments of uncertainty.
The responsibility of carrying a vision that no one else can fully see yet.
I've come to realize that leadership isn't defined by how visible you are. It's shaped by the invisible work you're willing to do when no one is watching.
The conversations that bring clarity.
The willingness to ask hard questions.
The discipline to slow down long enough to make the right decision instead of simply making the next one.
Some of the most important work I've done has never appeared on a website or a portfolio. It's happened around a table, in strategy sessions, and in the quiet work of helping founders rediscover who they are and where they're going.
That's the kind of work I love most.
Because when a leader gains clarity, it doesn't just change them.
It changes the entire organization.

There comes a point when what got your organization here won't get it where you want to go next.
Not because your team isn't capable.
Not because you're lacking effort.
But because growth has a way of exposing the gaps in your foundation.
You begin to notice it in unexpected places.
The right people aren't connecting with your organization.
Every major decision requires endless discussion.
Your team starts interpreting the vision differently.
Growth feels heavier than it should.
These aren't isolated problems.
They're connected.
And until you address what's beneath them, you'll keep treating symptoms instead of solving the source.
That's why I care so deeply about brand strategy.
Not because it creates better marketing.
Because it creates alignment.
Alignment around your identity.
Alignment around your vision.
Alignment around the future you're building together.
When that foundation is strong, everything built on top of it becomes stronger too.
If your organization is showing signs that it's outgrown its foundation, maybe it isn't time for another tactic. Maybe it's time to redefine the foundation itself.

There’s something special about returning to a project and remembering the people behind it.
I had the privilege of building a website for Ochoco Christian Conference Center, but what I’ll remember most is the time spent with the camp directors, John and Cheree - hearing their heart for this place and the people who come through its doors.
So when I returned to photograph the camp, it felt less like a photoshoot and more like documenting a story already unfolding.
The towering pines. The quiet spaces. The gathering places. The people who make it what it is.
Every organization has a story worth telling. Sometimes the first step is simply taking the time to see it.

I'm honored to be featured by OregonVoyager and to have the opportunity to share a little more of the story behind Encompassed Co. Thank you to the team at OregonVoyager for creating a platform that highlights the journeys of founders, creatives, and small business owners.
As I reflected on the interview, one thought kept coming back to me:
"The most aligned brands came from the most vulnerable work of digging into identity."
That's still the belief that shapes everything I do.
Brand strategy isn't about creating an image people admire.
It's about having the courage to ask the deeper questions.
Who are we?
What are we building?
What do we want to be known for?
What kind of organization are we becoming?
Those conversations aren't always easy, but they've consistently led to the strongest brands I've had the privilege of helping build.
Because when identity is uncovered, alignment follows.
And when an organization is aligned, it moves with greater confidence, clarity, and purpose.

Somewhere along the way, we started believing that exhaustion was evidence of ambition.
I don't believe that.
We're meant to build from a place of rest.
Not because we're unwilling to work hard, but because rest changes the quality of the work.
When we're constantly striving, every decision is fueled by urgency.
When we're grounded, decisions are fueled by conviction.
Rest creates space to think clearly.
To create intentionally.
To lead with wisdom instead of reaction.
I've found that the healthiest organizations aren't built by founders who never stop.
They're built by founders who know when to pause, reconnect with what matters, and move forward from a place of alignment.
The goal isn't to escape hard work.
The goal is to build a life - and an organization - that isn't sustained by hustle alone.

Every founder reaches a point where instinct alone isn't enough.
The organization is bigger.
The team is growing.
The decisions carry more weight.
Brand strategy gives you something incredibly valuable:
A framework for making decisions.
Instead of asking, "What should we do?"
You begin asking,
"Does this align with who we are and where we're going?"
That shift changes everything.
Because when identity is defined, direction follows.

Some artists paint what they see.
Others help us see what we've been overlooking.
One of the things I love most about Shirley Hogg's work is her ability to remove distraction. By placing each animal against a quiet white background, the focus shifts entirely to the subject.
Nothing competes for your attention.
For a moment, it's simply creature to creature. Eye to eye.
There's an intimacy in that simplicity that invites you to slow down, observe, and appreciate the beauty of the natural world in a way that often gets lost in the noise of everyday life.
It was a privilege to create these brand photographs - and her website - for an artist whose work reminds us that sometimes less allows us to see so much more.

Not every opportunity is meant to be pursued.
In fact, some of the best decisions a founder makes are the ones they never say yes to.
A clearly defined identity gives you something incredibly valuable:
Discernment.
It becomes the filter that helps you recognize what aligns - and what doesn't.
Because growth isn't about saying yes to more.
It's about saying yes to what moves your organization toward the future it's meant to build.
Some of my favorite creative work has never had a client attached to it.
A few years ago, a friend invited me into his homebrewing hobby. He perfected the recipes - I found myself imagining the stories each beer could tell.
A couple batches in, I started designing custom labels for every bottle.
This first one is Clandestine, a milk stout inspired by the idea of secrecy. The disappearing letterforms and the simple line illustration hint at something hidden, quietly inviting you into the story behind the name.
Projects like these remind me why I fell in love with design in the first place.
Not because every idea has to become a business.
But because creativity grows when we give ourselves permission to play.
This is the first in a series of beer labels I've created over the years. More to come.
