S. 1306 is the companion bill to HR 845, which passed the House in December and would remove gray wolves from the federal endangered species list. We needed just one Senator to oppose, and that one key voice was Sen. Booker! 🙂

Sen. Booker spoke in defense of gray wolves and their need to retain protections when he reminded the Senate that the purpose of the Endangered Species Act is to recover species across a significant portion of their historic range - gray wolves are still absent from wide swaths of their native range.

BREAKING: Bipartisan Bill Aims to Restore Endangered Species Act Protections

For the first time since the Trump administration weakened Endangered Species Act protections, lawmakers from both parties are pushing back.

Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Mike Quigley (D-IL) have introduced the Safeguarding Endangered Species Act, bipartisan legislation that would restore federal protections against habitat destruction—a cornerstone of endangered species conservation for more than 40 years.

Earlier this month, the Trump administration finalized a rule rescinding the ESA’s long-standing definition of “harm,” removing federal recognition that destroying critical habitat can kill or injure endangered wildlife by preventing them from feeding, breeding, sheltering, or raising young.

For wolves, habitat protection is recovery. Healthy, connected landscapes allow packs to establish territories, disperse naturally, find prey, and avoid unnecessary conflict with people. Without habitat, legal protections alone cannot prevent extinction.

If passed, the Safeguarding Endangered Species Act would restore the historic interpretation of the ESA and reaffirm the simple principle that protecting endangered species means protecting the places they depend on to survive.

This is one of the first bipartisan efforts to reverse the recent rollback of ESA protections and it deserves public attention.

Not symbols. Not stereotypes. Not myths.

And they deserve the opportunity to shape their own future as part of healthy, connected ecosystems.

Ahead of July 4th, we’re reflecting on what it means to care for the wildlife that shares this landscape with us.

Wolves are a native species that have long been part of North America’s natural heritage.

Across the country, that value is broadly reflected. A survey revealed that 78% of Americans support continued protections for wolves under the Endangered Species Act - including a majority of ranchers, farmers, and rural residents in states with wolf populations.

Americans want wolves protected.

Yesterday, a federal court ruled that four key provisions (issued in 2019) that implement the Endangered Species Act are unlawful. The lawsuit was brought on
by the Center for Biological Diversity () , Sierra Club () , and WildEarth Guardians () , who were all represented by
Earthjustice ()!

This is a huge win for endangered species in our country, making it more difficult for the administration to undermine protections for the plants and animals that need it most.

Thank you to all of those organizations that worked so hard to fight for our wildlife!

Today, a federal court struck down President Trump’s attacks against the Endangered Species Act, restoring key values of the bedrock environmental law.

For more than 50 years, the Endangered Species Act has been one of the most successful conservation laws we have. This victory gives vulnerable species and the ecosystems we all rely on a chance to recover in the face of the climate crisis and relentless pressure from extractive industries.
