________
Morning — Big Tree Trail, Wanachus-Hilthuuis Tribal Park Wanachus-Hilthuuis is Canada's first Tribal Park — declared in 1984 to stop clear-cut logging of Meares Island. The Big Tree Trail is a 1km cedar boardwalk past red cedars over 1,000 years old. The Hanging Garden Tree is 18.3 metres in circumference. Water taxi from Tofino Harbour takes 10 minutes.
Afternoon — / Boat tours into Clayoquot Sound — grey whales, orcas, sea lions, otters on the water. Bears and wolves on the shoreline if the day cooperates. Both operators run half-day tours to Hot Springs Cove: geothermal springs via a 2km cedar boardwalk through old-growth rainforest. Book ahead.
Late Afternoon — Campbell Street, 1984. Head to the oldest surf shop in Tofino. Boards, wetsuits, apparel, and the best Tofino swag selection in town.
Evening — at the Marina, open until 11PM. Wild-caught seafood, free-range meats, herbs from the on-site garden. The fish tacos and the Sound of the Sea are the consistent standouts. Views across Clayoquot Sound.
Where to Stay — Every room faces the Pacific. Summer: surf and sea base camp. September through April: storm watching season, with blankets, binoculars, and a menu to match. The Pointe Restaurant is on site. Book well in advance.

A Flight Attendant Shares the 6 Things She Wishes All Parents Knew Before Traveling with Kids
Every resilient landscape begins with a seed. But not just any seed.
Outside Winters, California, Hedgerow Farms has spent nearly four decades growing native seed for the landscapes that define the West. Their work isn’t about filling fields with wildflowers. It’s about restoring ecosystems with plants that truly belong. Genetically adapted to their region, supporting pollinators, conserving water, and helping landscapes thrive for generations to come.
Walking these fields, it’s impossible not to feel hopeful. Every ribbon of blooming lupine, every stand of native grass, every bee moving from flower to flower is part of something much bigger: a quieter, more thoughtful vision for the future of the West.
It’s a reminder that the most beautiful gardens aren’t always the ones we create from scratch. Sometimes they’re the ones we help nature reclaim.
Read more about their remarkable work in the latest issue on newsstands now, available on Apple News+, and at Sunset.com.
