Deschutes County is accepting applications for the 2026 County College program. The deadline to apply is Friday, July 10.

County College is a free, 10-week program that gives community members a behind-the-scenes look at county government. Participants meet with County staff, learn how local services work, and tour facilities like Deschutes 9-1-1, Knott Landfill, the elections office and the road department.

This year, classes will be held on Tuesdays, from 4 to 6:30 p.m., beginning Aug. 25 and continuing through Oct. 27.

Applicants must either live in Deschutes County or own a business or work full-time in the county. Applicants are required to pass a background check before being accepted into the program. Space is limited, and not everyone is admitted.

I attended this community screening at The Belfry last week. This film has been on my mind for a year as something tangible we can do to bring people together in conversation about mending our divides and ending isolation. If you missed the two community screenings why not invite neighbors and friends over for a potluck and watch it together at home? Bottom line is, we need togetherness. It’s essential for democracy to actually work.

Sisters nonprofit Citizens4Community (C4C) will host a free community screening of the award-winning documentary “Join or Die” on Thursday, June 4, at The Belfry. Doors open at 6 p.m., with a live virtual Q&A with directors Pete and Rebecca Davis at 6:30 p.m. The film will screen from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Thanks to sponsorship by St. Charles Health System, the event is open to the public and free to attend. Light refreshments will also be provided. Seating is limited, and advance registration is strongly encouraged at citizens4community.com/events/join-or-die.
Inspired by the work of social scientist Robert Putnam, author of the seminal book “Bowling Alone,” the film “Join or Die” explores the decades-long decline of civic participation in America and makes a hopeful, practical case for rebuilding community life through clubs, associations, volunteer groups, and local civic engagement.
In the film, directors Rebecca and Pete Davis follow Putnam’s research on the decline of American community connections and ask three urgent questions:
• What makes democracy work?
• Why is American democracy in crisis?
• And what can we do about it?
The film features Robert Putnam himself, as well as prominent scholars, researchers, and civic leaders like Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Hillary Clinton, Pete Buttigieg, Eddie Glaude Jr., Raj Chetty, and Priya Parker, while also spotlighting community groups working to rebuild civic life across the country.
“This film goes straight to the heart of our mission,” said Kellen Klein, Executive Director of C4C. “At a time when many people feel isolated or disconnected, Join or Die offers a powerful reminder that the simple act of getting together with others – whether through a club, a nonprofit, a volunteer effort, or a local gathering – is one of the most meaningful ways we can strengthen our community.”
The event will also include casual “civic speed dating” before and after the film. Local nonprofits, clubs, and volunteer groups are invited to be on hand to share ways residents can get involved in their work.
“Whether you’re looking to find your people, discover ways to give back to Sisters Country, or simply hear a hopeful vision for rebuilding community life, this promises to be an inspiring evening,” said Klein.
